At what point do things start to go bad?

I know a couple who ordered a 1997 4.6L F-150 from Ford new. He was actually retired from Ford assembly line.
To date, they have just over 300,000 miles on their truck, with only normal maintenance and wear and tear items being replaced. Original motor and tranny.
I think it goes to say, it all depends on how it has been maintained since new. He is very meticulous about his vehicles and does all the maintenance like clockwork.
I just recently got a '97 4x4 F-150 with 155k miles on it, 4.6L. I have no idea if the previous owners took care of it, I'm hoping they did....time will tell but so far so good!
