Unhappy brake pad backing plate

How important is the backing plate that goes on the front brakes. It was hard as snot to get off and almost impossible to get back on. I replaced my brakes on my excursion and now I have what feels like a pull to the right and a shudder. I am going to pull them off again and check, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I followed (pretty sure anyway) guzzles maintenance webpage (I believe I did everything right??) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You mean dust shield ? That it self should not cause the shudder .

I'm confused! I ***-u-me that you changed the pads and not the calipers and pads. Anyway, the backplate, the big round thing with a notch in it for the caliper to fit into that bolts to the spindle housing, does not have to be removed to change pads or calipers or both

I recently changed my rotors and here is what I did.

Removed wheel
Removed the brake pad spring clips (2 per side)
Removed the two bolts that screw into the caliper slide pins
Removed the caliper with pads still in place (don't have to remove anything else to change pads)
Removed caliper support bracket bolts that hold bracket (required removal if changing rotors) to the backplate
Changed rotors
Reversed order to complete job.

Not sure how many miles you have on the X but if a lot you probably need to replace the calipers especially if you put new pads on. Pushing the pistons back in will possibly cause them to bind since there is possibly pitting and crud built up on the outside of the piston. The seals get cranky when that is done.

If you do not bed the new pads properly to the rotors, you will get shudder.

Would suggest you have the rotors checked to be sure they are not warped. Another good source for shudder.

I think we are all confused as to what you mean by this. There is the caliper, pads, caliper mounting bracket, and the rotor.

Definitely need more information. The pads consist of up to 3 parts - friction material, backing plate and some have a anti-squeal layer as well. What pads did you use and can you give more details?

I was also thinking that he may be referring to the backing plates for the pads. It's really only the cheap brands that have the ones that can come off. Any good pads like Wagner or Bendix have them riveted on.

That was my initial thought also, it was the backing plate for the old pads, the newer pads had them riveted on so the backing plates from the old pads would not fit along with the new pads. Hopefully that made sense! As for the pulling, make sure the slide pins are lubed up properly and moving freely. I would replace them altogether with new ones.
