Power steering pump housing broken

Hi. The power steering pump on my 79 150 4X4 has been leaking for a long time, and now won't really hold fluid at all. I've been getting by with no p/s while I do other projects, but it's annoying, and as far as avoiding something at high speed or something like that, it's unsafe, so I want to fix it. I've replaced the rubber sections of both hoses, assuming there was some leak I couldn't see in them, made sure the fittings were tight and that the cap fit, but then today, when I was just sort of poking around, I noticed that the entire outer plastic housing, the reservoir, was really loose, and I think the fluid is just pouring out of there. Can I get a new plastic piece somewhere? Can that piece even be replaced, or do I need a whole new pump?
Thanks for any help, AleX

A new replacement pump is around $40, give or take 10 depending on where you get it.

About $60-80 will get you a Saginaw (20-6244), if that's your flavor as well.

O wow OK, never figured it'd be that cheap. Either way though, do you, or does anybody else, know if the pump and plastic reservoir/pump housing can be separated and reattached? And how they are attached? The pump itself, as far as generating pressure, has never given me any problems, the reservoir just won't hold fluid, and 50$ is 50$. Is there any way that I can either reattach my pump's current housing, or is there a new one I can buy if the fact that the housing is detached means it's broken?

They are rebuildable, as for new replacement housings I am not sure. But, it would be possible to buy a used pump from the boneyard and swap housings, keeping your pump that you know works.

A used pump at the yards around here are $12-20. So that's where it might make sense to go ahead and get a new/reman for $40.

With mine, the hose fitting was literally broken off the casing. It was faster for me just to replace it with a remanufactured pump. If you're going to mess with it, you might as well just replace it with a remanufactured unit instead of messing with used stuff.

It's a relatively easy job; the pulley was on there pretty good though. If you replace the pump, make sure you use the correct puller, and that you put the new pulley back on correctly (if you put it on backwards, it won't come back off).

+1 on using the correct puller and installer. Makes a world of difference, the parts store should let you borrow one for free, or may even do it right there in the store if you bring the old one with you.

I bought a kit from Harbor Freight for like $19 several years ago and it is pretty usefull.

Siliconed the heck out of the pump housing and it's working great so far. The pump itself may go soon, but since it was only the reservoir now, I just couldn't justify it. Thanks anyway though guys, AleX.
