I think the op has a 2001 F250. That was my concern. Don't know about the 7.3 or the 6.0 but on the 6.4, do not use anything that requires a new cap. OEM at least on the 6.4 is gonna always be my recommendation.
You may be right. I think we jumped to the 6.0 conclusion because he mentioned the cap.

The first time I changed my fuel filters I used the only tool I had, a 1-3/8" x 3/4" drive socket and a ratchet that is about 3 feet long. It worked. The fuel cap is 35mm. But it won't work on the oil filter which is 36mm, so a big crescent wrench worked on that. By the second time around, I had the correct tools.

Well, you can forget all our ramblings above about diesels and special sockets. I believe your fuel filter is just a can style on the frame rail. No special caps as far as I know. But there are special quick release fittings you will need to deal with. Some need release tools, some don't.
