Nice going Robin and Big Joe. I hear you Jason, maybe something will pan out here soon. Saving on that tow is golden. I needed a tow back about 5 years ago and it was between 75.00-150.00, one of those, could only imagine with your miles to a shop it would be now..
Jason I just got off the phone with Joe,
I would not recommend any shop in Williams.
I might be able to get a radiator shipped to Williams tomorrow, they are super simple to change. there is also a parts store in Williams "expect to pay tourist price" but anyhow if it will help i can contact my suppliers and see if they have any deliveries going to Williams.
Bart gave me advice on how to stop or get the leak to a trickle. Worst case scenario, I limp it to Williams and pay Bart to bring his service truck to fix it. This will accomplish getting me out of being ripped off in touristville and getting a good guy we can all trust to get us back on the road.
My family is thankful the alternator didn't give out yesterday when it was 110 degrees on the side of I-8 or in the mountains from phoenix to flagstaff. My family is thankful this is just an issue of inconvenience and money and not an accident or mishap causing injury or a health issue like we had with our daughter a few years ago traveling through ND. This is just a small glitch in what has been a great vacation.
I tried JB weld but don't have anything to drain the radiator below the punctur so the JB Weld won't set. Bart said to try separating the fins from the punctured tube and then pinch the tube really good at, above and below the puncture and leave the cap loose.
The whole thing is just crazy. I had an issue I knew exactly how to fix. A great American (retired 68 year old gentleman) gave me a ride and refused money or diesel. I fix the problem and then the dang breakerbar falls and punctures the radiator.
I did consider some tinfoil and JB Weld.... Obviously the beer can is a much better idea. I might have a few in the cooler. Course they are full but I know how to fix that part of the problem.
It is very tight to get to the puncture. I have the fan shroud un-clipped at the bottom but it is still tight. It was all I could do to get a plastic fork globbed with JB Weld up to the leak.
The gentleman that gave me the ride came to me after hearing me check in and explain my problem to the campground staff (because I was trying to get my truck parked and disconnected from the RV before it died). He came to me offering to give me a ride. I told him I had already contacted a parts store but it was 50 miles away. He said he new how far the town was and he was prepared to give me a ride. I tried to get him to stop so I could top off his new 2011 6.7 Powerstroke (sweet truck) and absolutly refused cash. Fine American. He was all grins when I told him I changed the alternator in record time and crushed when I told him what happened. I will have his mailing address in the morning before he leaves.
Jason, I have in the past used a can of chewing tabbacco as stop leak. way back in the central mountains of Idaho. 1/2 can of Copenhagen, add water, leave cap loose 1 notch. the small particles plug up the hole and they are easy to flush out later when you can do the real repair. made it out of the mountains and 250 miles home with no issues.
Its just a stop gap repair but it might help next time
I tried pinching the tube this morning. No luck because the JB Weld set up on everything but the hole. Bart is hunting down a Radiator and then headed up here in his service truck.
Just got off the phone with Jim, nice talking to you sir.
