Driving down the freeway yesterday afternoon I had a front tire loose the tread at about 80mph, talk about an experience. This was a BFG M/T KM that was a little over 3 years old. Now I get to replace both fronts to match my new KM2s I've had in the rear
I felt the truck get a little loose about a mile before it happened, but blamed it on the rough road, guess I was wrong there. I'm not sure how many miles were on the tires, tread depth is at about 7/32" so they were at about 30%. Insurance will cover the body damage, but I have a 1k deductible... Looking at 2500-3k for repairs, about 700 of that is parts, so doing the work myself at my dads shop I may be lucky to break even there.
I took the tire to two Discount Tires and neither of them had even heard of one of these tires coming apart like this. They told me to take it over to American tire to have them handle warranty. I'll be doing that tomorrow.
I've thrown tread off a trailer tire like that. Shot about 60' in the air and 2 cars went under it before it landed harmlessly on the ground. Tread was still good, but the tires were getting old.

heat will make a tire do that..more so on the front because they hold the weight in the turns and dont go as strait down the road like a rear tire does......we went though 10 sets of tires on a 6 car car trailer running 16" wheels we used last year for this very same reason...if that is not a E rated tire..the tire shack may not cover it...door sticker said E rated only..these are not your every day 5000 lb 4x4
This experience could have been worse beings it was the front tire, glad things worked out for you. Take the tire back and keep words to a minimum, the guys are right, they could be stern on load ratings and investigate it further.
The date code one the tire is 0307. They are rated at 3000 lbs, and the stock firestone spare is rated for 3085, anyone know if original tires are the same?
Took it to Americas tire, the guy there was really helpful. They pulled if off the rim, checked for any patches or plugs-none. He filed a claim with BFG, said they should be calling me today or tomorrow. He said that BFG will cover everything, all I should be out of pocket is the other tire and MAYBE a prorated amount for the failed tire, as it was worn to about 6-7 32nds.
If BFG handles it like he says they will I won't be buying another brand tire, ever. He said they are the only ones that stand behind their product like thi
Sounds promising. Let us know what they say. The wife has BFG's now. We've been thinking of changing when they wear out, but this might be a good reason to stick with them.

Same here. Lost a Merit trailer tire on Easter. It kissed the tire behind it and both blew their treads Way up in the air. Took a big piece of my awning and almost got my friends behind. My fault. They were too old but had good tread. I knew better.
I have never had a problem with any BFG tire in all my 53 years. That said my wife and daughters all roll on Michelin LTX now. Superior ride and traction at a premium price.
I hope BFG steps up and takes care of that damage.
