Torque converter bad ?????

My son's truck (83 F-150 2WD) with a 70's 351 stopped moving. How do you tell if it's the torque converter or the tranny? He said it would wine in first gear and not go into second unless you let off the pedal and then it would shift. It wouldn't stay in overdrive either. Also trying to ID the tranny. Here's the #'s off the tranny PF-E3SP-7006. Has a "36" stamped on the bell housing and a "33" stamped on the tailshaft. If you can tell me what year and type of tranny this is I would appreciate it. Also what year tranny's will work in this truck if it needs a tranny.

Thanks,

Bob L.

If it's the torque converter it won't move in any gear. If it is the trans it will move in some gears and not in others.

The only overdrive trans that was made in 1983 was the AOD.

Mark,
Based on the #'s on the transmission can you ID it as the correct transmission for this truck ? PF-E3SP- 7006 CFD-36. Can you tell me what motor this trans would have been matched up with? Since none of the gears work, even reverse, were going to try a new torque converter.

Thanks,

Bob

No, I can't. I don't have a way to decode those numbers. I do know that the AOD wasn't used behind a 351 because it wouldn't last.

First you said it would whine in 1st gear and not shift to second. Now you say it doesn't move at all. A new torque converter without rebuilding/replacing the trans is now a waste of time and money.

The numbers cast in the case and extension housing identify which die made that part. It doesn't mean anything towards identifying the trans.

Mark,
A little more info on the truck. It does have a 351W. Apparently someone in the past switched motors and apparently left the original tranny in the truck. The motor is a 70"s 351W ( It appently had a 302 originally). As far as the whining and not going into 2nd gear this happened for a while and then it wouldn't move at all in any gear. We had to tow it home. I have surmised from the bolt pattern on the pan and the writing on the pan that it is a AOD and not a C-4.
Are you saying that we should look for a C-4 tranny because of the 351 motor? That the AOD will not last behind this motor?
Bear with me I'm trying to learn about these tranny's. Not something I have alot of knowledge about so I'm trying to educate myself along with helping my son out.

thanks,
Bob L

The AOD can last if you get a performance rebuild. There are many places around that can build that trans to last with a 351.
