ok guys, i am pushing my limits with driving everyone nuts with 2 new threads in 1 day,but i seem to have ran into a problem changing u joints on my 90 f250. i pushed the old u joints out, and going to get ready to install new u joints and realize they are WAY oversized for my driveshaft, i cross referenced them and the new ones are in fact for a 250, but could the previous owners have swapped the driveshaft with one from a f150, if so how much of a strengh difference is there in driveshafts, sorry for the crap pictures, i dont get along with cameras
the new u joint size
the old u joint size
side by side comparison of the caps
this may sound like a silly question, but did you try the other caps? On mine, the cap sizes are actually different. The two that go in the driveshaft will be the same, and the two that get u-bolted on should be the same, but (at least on mine) the four caps are not all the same size.
the new ones are from autozone part number 2-0053DG. the original ones are so old they look practically factory, no luck on numbers for them
also its the rear driveshaft, reg cab 2 u joint setup
i just looked up on autozone website, if i look up for a 90 f150 with a 351 the u joint part number is 2-4800DG , so i am leaning towards the previous owner swapped driveshafts at this moment, so my big question would be how much weaker is a 150 driveshaft from a 250 driveshaft?? also would a 350 driveshaft work IF i can find one in the same configuration ( yoke wise into the tranny)
Ok, according to Napa Pro Link, the part number of the correct u-joint is NPJ-P354, for a 1990 F250 5.8L Automatic, except super cab.
The one you have (according to your measurements) is NPJ-P331, for a 1990 F250 5.8L automatic trans WITH super cab.
Your caliper measurements are right on with what the specs are on these two U-joints. At least if you don't have a NAPA Auto Parts around, you can usually get a store to cross-reference the number
awesome information there, i definately thank you for that, but i just cross referenced the u joints from a 90 f150 and a 90 f350, and they are the same exact part number, so i dont think there is a difference in driveshaft strengths if a 150 and 350 use the same u joint
yeah i looked on their website more, and seen that on the 2 joint driveshafts for the 150 and 350 is the same part #s as the front and center u joints on a 250 3 joint driveshaft, if that made sense in any way how i said it, o well computer error i suppose, dont suppose it says how much the u joints from napa were did it
Sounds like the old light duty F250 verses the HD 250 issue, is your rear axle a full floater or the lighter duty single bearing unit like the F150 design?
FYI, it would make sense that you have a light duty F250, as I believe that all of the F250 supercabs were built on the HD chassis. (at least in the 86 trucks which I am very familier with) And what was previously posted tends to back this up.
So, if what I suspect is the case, then you do not have a swaped in F150 driveshaft, but what came as OEM on a LD F250.
I may be seeminly making a big issue of the LD vrs HD issues, but you are likely to find more differences as well, many more than the u-joints that is. It may bode you well in the future to know what you have exactly.
But then, I may be wrong on all of the supercabs being built on the HD chassis, so if anyone wants to correct me here, feel free.
well i definately know its a light duty, i just would have figured that the computers would have said something about it.. definately good thing to remember about the LD/HD differences, if i see any differences again i will note them, possibly help someone else one day
I found a Spicer catalog a while back and thought it was pretty helpful when I was swapping transmissions and driveshafts in my truck. Maybe it will help you figure out what you need and what you have.

The reference was probably there on the computer, but since it (computer) didn't take the kids behind the counter by the hand and show him there was difference in trucks you got the wrong part... I'll bet he got year, make, and (possibly) model, then picked the first reference number and went with it, damn the footnotes!!!!!!!
You WERE at Autozone, remember????
Can you tell I HATE Autozone??? I'll do without parts before I'll go there!!!
