If I could find a 428 crank Id do it... but can't.
Depends on cost also. Im kinda going "cheap" with this motor right now. I just want to do heads, cam, intake, carb, and headers.
Im planning on taking a 460 and making it a 514.. (heard that was possible w/ the crank from a catalog)
So i want to build that motor for the truck w/ alot of $$$$
Then the 390 gets put into a front engined dragster (just for jokes)
I wasn't planning to pull the motor from the truck. I appreciate all of the suggestions thus far, they are a ton of help!
Am I right in thinking I should scrap the Holley carb and replace it with an Edelbrock? I'll probably do the RPM manifold at the same time.
I do have oil pressure probs after running interstate speeds, but that is judging from the stock oil pressure guage and it drops off of the charts with no valve noise. Thaty makes sense doesn't it? Oil pressure will drop, but heads are already over-oiled so no valvetrain noise, just crank bearings and such getting under-oiled, right?
I plan on having this truck until I can afford a Powerstroke '94-'97, so hopefully it won't be long. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this truck, but it is not my daily driver and I want a Powerstroke for the towing/hauling power and to have as a daily driver. This said, I may not put a ton of money into the truck since it may be within a year or two and I'll be selling it.
I'd say if your holley is working ok, keep it on there.
Edelbrock isn't much better if you don't/can't go through and fix their machine work. If you can find an old Carter-AFB 600 series you'd be set pretty well. But good luck there. Junkyard maybe, swap-meet, or ebay is about the only places I can think of to find one.
You may need to add some more oil to the engine. Running a HV pump? All the suggestions I've heard are to add another couple of quarts if you've done the oil mods and are running a hv pump.
Make sure you get the ARP oil pump driveshaft. I have seen several pics of stock shafts looking like a candy cane. It only costs 15 bucks so it is rediculously cheap compared to having one break. This one won't get lost in the oil pan when you pull the dizzy either.
