12k might be a bit much. i have a 9k camper(loaded) and i'm o.k. i also only have 3:73 gears. i would be better off with 4:30's or 4:56's. i picked up a tuner from mike at 5 star tuning and it helped alot. shift points are right on. i also tow on mostly flat land. are you towing in hilly areas?
The V-10 in the SuperDuty's is a very capable towing machine,,,even better with 4:30 gears,,might not be quite as fuel efficent,,,but will not be that much worse then the 6.0 when towing!
Hmmm I have an 06' F-350 w/a six-O and over 51 k on it now,,,and the truck has been Great !! I tow several different trailer's with it,,Plow snow,,and has never let me down!!
Did your truck sit alot ?? These Six-O's must work,,,Pulling hard with them is what they like,,and helps keep the turbo freed up and working properly.
I drove my 6.0 daily, but had head gasket issues, transfer case went out when it was 3 days old and had never been engaged ( made a clicking) injectors at 15k and I just got tired of it.........I figured a good used V-10 or the new 6.2 v-8...I cannot afford $52k for the new diesel
I would love a Diesel, but the 6.4 is new to me and is it ok?
I have a 2000 Excursion with the V10 and it hasn't let me down yet. Getting ready to drive it from Alaska to Alabama this summer with a car trailer behind it and I wanted to know if anyone knew how I could tell what gears it had in the rear diff just by looking at it.
PS The Ford dealer up here is horrible.
I think the pin weight might be too much for the F250, but I don't *know* that to be true. I'd look at a F350. I think a F350 with V10 and 4.30 gears would work for you, but a diesel would likely be more fuel efficient and I don't know where you tow, but a turbo charged diesel doesn't lose as much power at altitude.
I have a f250 v10 with 4.10 gears...pulls my 5th wheel with lots of power to spare. I did add firstone air bags in the rear due to a tad bit of rear end sagging....otherwise it is more than adequate....5th wheel weighs about 11,500 pounds.
I had an older dodge cummins and an older v10...then bought a chevy 6.0...the chevy was just barely adequate on level ground. Had to get another v10. The cummins and the v10 seem to me to pull close to the same. I bet the cummins would have out shined the v10 if I was towing a lot heavier though. Story short, I think you would be fine with the v10 on an f250, though an F350 would be more stable. I bought the F250 because I found a real nice truck at a good price. Had it been an F350 I would not have hesitated....just can't have too much truck!!
I pull a 7K lb boat. When it's on the trailer, the combo is 30 ft long and nearly 9 ft wide (lots of wind resistance). It pulls very easy. I have an 08 V10 with 4.30 gears.
Just went on our first camping trip with our new 10-11k TT with 1400 on the ball. I have to tell you that I was amazed at how small it felt back there. Up until this trip, the only thing we had been towing with it as a 3500# enclosed snowmobile-atv trailer. I thought there would be a huge difference when we hooked up and headed out with the TT. You may find this hard to believe, but honestly, other than a touch more sway and wind grab, there was NO difference. Took off from lights and toll booth's like it was the little sled trailer back there. More than enough power. I really expected it to work a lot harder with that kind of a load on. Plus, doing 67-72, we averaged 8 MPG. Only 1.5 off from empty! I think 12k would be no issue at all for you!
Some things I think you need to consider is how far and how often do you expect to tow that weight?
Can you tow that weight with the A/C on if you want?
What speed do you want to cruise at and what speed to you expect to hold climbing hills?
You are coming from having a diesel, what do you expect performance wise. The diesel performs very differently. The V10 is going to rev and shift alot but it is very capable.

See, I didn't get much shifting or revving and I had the AC on. Only on really long grades. Most of the time, just lugged along at 2k RPM's at 70 MPH.
