Exclamation Please Help! Brake Problem

OK I have a 1994 Ford F-250 7.3 Powerstroke 4x4 auto locking hubs, auto tranny.

Bare in mind My dad and I are Both ASE Certified mechanics as you read the following:

I'm doing a front end brake job, Calipers, Rotors, Pads, Brake Lines (flex line) on both sides.

I removed the wheel, then the little cap and all the snap rings and all that good stuff till I got to the Axle Locknut.

My dad has a 1990 Ford Bronco so we already have the 4 Prong Axle Locknut Socket. But it doesn't fit my truck!

My axle locknut only has 1 notch on it, looks like it needs a spanner wrench, I've tried every where to find the right tool, Auto zone, Advance, O'reilys, Pep Boys, Harbor Freight Tools, Sears, even called ford service department and talked to one of the Dumbest mechanics I've ever talked to.

Can anyone Help?

I can't help you out, but rest assured that someone who has "been there and done that" will be along before too long.
Good luck to you!!

I thought that too but the nut is there. It's a bigger socket than the bronco one is. You may not need it to get it loose, clean it good in there and you will see the nut. Trust me, its there. I screwed up a nut and almost the spindle too taking mine apart.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...indle-nut.html

Look at that thread, will show you what the nut looks like anyway.

Make sure you don't break the "C" lock in front of the nut. I did and had to get parts.

You need the correct socket.

The lockouts on the 250's and 350's are way bigger than the 150s/bronco's.

Good info Darin.

I had the same problem on the same truck. After being given the wrong socket several several times by the "parts specialists" I finally guessed on the right one which is a gigantic 1/2" drive 6 point socket. It is not round at the head but more of a hex shape like the inside of a 6 point socket. I believe it is 2.5" but can't verify until I get home.

Thanks guys, I'll look to see if thats it. Now so last night I was driving home and my wheel like popped out a little bit so I had it towed home, I just jacked it up and the Whole wheel fell off! wheel, brakes, hub and everything? WTF lol and theres this little C shaped clip that is all mangled up, but not damage to anything else, I'm sooo confused how a hub that I couldn't get the nut off of just came off on its own and that nut is still in place.

That OTC6796 is the correct socket for the auto hub rigs. Good find William.

Welcome to the forum AT! Looks like you have a pretty big job ahead of you. Pics!

Update

You guys were right that was the right socket.

So this is what happened:

Yesterday when I pulled the wheel off to do the brakes the reason why I didn't see the locknut was because it had come off with all the other stuff inside I had apparently not even seen it, so I saw the notch or groove or what ever you wanna call it on the axle and it looked kinda like the bronco/ f150 nut with the notches so I was trying to figure out how to get it off lol

So the so called locknut had unlocked itself while I was driving last night and came off, the only thing holding my wheel on was the brake caliper.

Then this morning I jacked the truck up and the wheel/brakes/hub Literally fell off the truck, so after cleaning all the grease off everything to see what happened I saw the nut you guys were talking about. And that little C shaped clip with the 90 degree bend at the end was mutilated inside, but other then that no other damage to anything.

I'm not sure how or why that nut came off or how I was able to put every thing back on last night if that nut wasn't screwed on ?

Anyone know where I can get another C clip? or two if possible or have a picture of how its supposed to go back on, I'm 99% sure I put it back on right last night but ya never know lol

and to pjwoolw thank you for welcoming me to the forum!

Unless you find a lock somewhere, you have to buy a rebuild kit. Part number F6TZ-1K106-BB. It's like 60 bucks I think. edthepartsguy is a sponsor and I deal with him a lot and that's where I got mine.

Also I'll welcome you too, just didn't notice the first times.

Thanks for the help and the welcome, I figured I would have to buy the kit I was hoping someone could tell me otherwise lol at least it's only $60. Thanks again for the part # that'll save some time.
