I have a 2003 6.0 diesel with the 5r110 trans. After about 5 min of running the trans temp guage is buried on hot. Im sure its the guage sending unit, since I have an auto meter mechanical temp guage installed and that guage reads normal. My question is there a guage sending unit on the transmission and is this something that I can tackle myself?
A lot of times when the sensor inside the trans goes bad and make's the gauge spike to hot, it also shows up with a check gauge light in the dash and the OD light on the shifter flashes. The trans might also not want to shift right. It's a fairly easy fix for under $100 if you reinstall the fluid that must be drained before removing the pan.
Thats exactly whats going on. Check guage light goes on and tow light blinking. I just had the trans flushed at the dealership (BG flush) just less that 2000 miles ago.
I don't think you will hurt the trans by driving it for a day or two, but it will be hanging up in 3rd. and 4th. besides the rough shifts. I replaced my TFT sensor along with a front trans filter and a motor oil change plus grease front end all in 1.5 hours. After you unplug the wires to the TFT sensor you turn the sensor 90 degrees pull it straight down while grabbing it with needle nose pliers. The front of the sensor that goes into the trans is T shaped with a Oring on it. Install in reverse and you are done. Make sure your face is clear when you remove the TFT sensor, because there will be a few oz's of fluid that will gush out.
I have a Mag-Hytec deep trans pan. It has a drain plug so I can drain the fluid into a oil pan. Where is the TFT sensor and pig tail harness? Inside the trans pan or on the side of the trans?
Looking up at the inside of the trans it will be on the passanger side closest to the front of trans. The harness connector that plugs into it has very thin wires, I did not replace my harness when I installed my new TFT sensor. Just take your time, the job is a snap and you will save several hundred dollars.
