I am trying to install a set of hedman headers for my 79 300 and i am having some problems getting them to clear and bolt up. Instructions said i may have to move starter so i did. The headers went on great but then i could not get the starter back on. so i took the header back off and bolted the starter back on. it also said to take the front cross member off so i did that. the header is having trouble clearing the chassis by the starter. i am not sure what to do. any thoughts on what i might be doing wrong?
I haven't installed headers, but are you sure the headers weren't for an 80+ truck? The entire front of the chassis almost changed from 79 to 80 since they went from a solid front axle to the twin traction beam suspension. Just a thought.
Aren't long tube headers (Headman # 500-89300) the antithesis for the 300 I6? It's a tourquie motor and I've heard "shorties" R for that (long tube R 4 hp, no?).
Would the stock efi ex-manifold seal better n B more appropreate?
I don't C an end goal stated in the questioner's post. Thanks...
Fitment problems with headers especially involving the starter are common. A number of things can be done. Obtain a high torque mini starter. Use a BFH on the headers...the results will not be pretty. Heating with a torch and bending as necessary. Contact Hedman directly about the fitment problems.
A bit late now but you would have saved yourself some grief by using the EFI exhaust manifolds. Headers on these engines are a bragging rights item with little to none ROI especially without a port/polish job on the head where the real restrictions is. JMO.

do a search on Hedman headers to see my opinion and the fun I had. Buy a new starter before installing, because once installed, you starter is sealed in place!!
Harte3: "BFH" it took me a minute to get that one, but when I did I had to have a good laugh, because I did.
I ended up using a torch at either end of one tube and moving it slightly, and 'grinding my flaming frame!!! Wonderful fitting headers those Hedman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just replaced it with a new rebuilt one. But if I had had the $ at the time, I would have bought the best possible because it is a pia to r&r the it once that header is installed. If you go to Summit Racing, you can most likely find a mini starter that will work if you want to go that route. I think they are over $100.

Sorry I misread your initial Q. Didn't realize they were already bought.
Some (many?) have sealing problems w/ 300 I6 headers - headman may be a little better than other brands - depends on your opinion. Many on this forum like the oem EFI mani better, the HD (and rare) one from the big trucks 300 they were used on even better.

See my more intelligent younger bro's comment "the long tubes (you have purchased) are for low end grunt, on the other hand the shorties are for HP increases." I defer to him as it has been unrefutable proven (thru pipe welding experience) I have age but he has knowledge ;-} . Thank you Mr. Bill ("o0OHHh No, Mr. B....smishsplutphhut
I like Harte3 believe the mini starters may avoid the BFH approach or @ least reduce the need. Could you get some demsnsions before another removal & compare to products offered or do you need to get right back on the road.
I really like the cushion of a 2nd vehicle to avoid hasty decisions. I am short on $ (no comment Mr Bill, "Chad's a cheep p*ick" ;-) and do not make good decisions under stress ("chit, how'm I gunna get 2 wrk tomorrow?").
Keep in touch w/ the developments.
actually the process made me so mad the other day i have not even messed with it since. Its not a daily driver so i am in no hurry to get it on the road again. All i know is i am not going to cut the chassis. I was hoping it would all go on really easy but its not the case. When i get them on i will let you know what i did
Would it help to jack up the engine, move it to one side a bit?
You might want to think about going to the junk yard and pulling a set of EFI exh. manifolds for about $40. They flow nearly as good as headers and are trouble free.
