how important is 10k fuel filter replacement?

on another forum i mentioned that i still had factory fuel filters with 60k...someone was nice enough to inform me not to let ford know this for fear of voiding warranty. i had my local shop change them out a couple days ago. at almost $200 for the kit and installation(would have to be near $300 at a dealer), i have to ask...is this REALLY necessary every 10k like the maintanence schedule says? damn!

one word..extremely!!

You can do it yourself for alot less. Have Ed from www.partsguyed.com send you some.

These fuel systems are very touchy. I am really impressed that you have not had any issues.

do you drain the fuel/water separator monthly?

I'm not positive but I think the 6.0 and 6.4 use the same filter kits and I pay between 40 and 50 bucks for them and 1/2 hour to change taking my sweet time about it. And I do use OEM Racor filters. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Check the cost of your injectors. That will answer your question

Don't confuse price with cost...change the filters.

My maint schedule says 20,000 miles (normal use). That's what I've been going with. You can go with the heavy use schedule if you wanna. Or, split the dif. and go 15,000.....It is very important though to DO IT! 60K is crazy. You're lucky so far, but I wouldn't push your luck anymore.

I do mine at Valvoline for $115.00. Buddy of mine works at the local Stealership and now gets me parts at employee cost. So, I'll be able to do them for $60.00 now.

As sensitive as the fuel system is on the 6.4L to contaminates and water, the filters need to be as fresh as possible. The filter kits for the 6.0L and the 6.4L are different. The primary filters are the same size, but the secondary filter on the 6.4L is quite a bit larger than the 6.0's.

300 bucks at the dealership for fuel filters and to replace them? The one I go to only charge 130 to replace them. But I'm still going to do them myself.

I do mine every other oil change which would be 10,000 miles. At 50 bucks a kit you can change a lot of filters for the price of an injector plus your down time. They are simple to change, learn to do it.

What type of oil do you use to change it every 10k miles? I was told to do it every 5k.

In engineering, that is called an "opps"......

I am pushing to see if we can get the secondary filter separately.

It needs a lot more frequent changing than the big one.

I keep a watch on Ebay for the ford/Motorcraft filters, and buy when I find them. that way I am stocked.. I usually find a set for $35-40..
