hello all, this is my first post. I have a 99 f-250 7.3 with a stock turbo that has 150k on it. It just started making a weird whining/howling noise when you get on it real hard and when declerating. when i shut it down i can hear it whine down out of my stacks until it stops, which is a new noise. I have also been experiencing a surge/ stutter and low rpm. so is my turbo goin out? I still have boost preshure and good power, but this noise is pretty loud and not good sounding. For the past 6 months i have noticed a burt oil smell when i come to a stop, but cant find out where its coming from. im thinking it maybe leaking from the turbo and hitting the exhaust leaving no trail. so i feel i need to address it before i get stranded on the side of the road. I am due to leave on a trip sat and need to pin point whats goin on so i can get parts.
the truck has stock injectors, banks intercooler, banks chip, banks big turbo housing and wast gate. Fuel regulator bypass, high pressure oil line kit that connects both heads. 4'' downpipe that leads to a 4" straight piped stacks, k&n filter, water meth injection. 37" toyos, 8" lift.
so if its a turbo problem which turbo do you reccomend i go with?
also the build date is 01/98 which i believe is the early 99? i know a few things are different on 99 compared to the 99.5 and up. is the turbo effected? if so which turbos are available for it?
Pull the intake boot off the turbo and look for evidence of the turbo wheel hitting the housing. also check for excessive play in the shaft. there will be a little side to side in a good turbo but no end play(as in push and pull)
spin the wheel in should spin freely for 5-15 seconds
early 99 require some changes to run the Garrett and others, but the D66 from Beans is a good swap for a early 99
Also check that the 4 bolts that thread into the exhaust housing from the center section of the turbo. Those bolts are known to back out making oil seep and take out oil seals. If they are loose or missing the dealer sells packs of 4. Replace them using red high temp lock tite
