ok thanks i think ill check up on this a little more and maybe try a 3:89 or something pretty close. eventually i want a zf 5spd but cant do that right now.
I 2nd find out what gear ratio you have in the axles first.
Is this truck used empty somtimes and loaded?? if so I'd consider swaping your trans for a 4SP with the extra low first gear. yes it will lower the overall gearing on the highwy as it is not and overdrive. But they also have a low first gear to help move a load without killing the clutch.
This will be better loaded for sure. but it may use more fuel on the highway.
Both the front and rear axles need to have the ratios within 3% of each other or else!!
With the E4OD, going 50 mph pulling a heavy load, 4.11 gears are what you want.
I have a 300 with the E4OD and 4.11 gear ratio. She'll move 7,000 lbs like it's nothing.
I hope you meant a 7000lb load, not combined. I have no issues moving 12000 lbs combined. Though I live in ND which is fairly flat. My 3.55s work fine here. In hilly country I would need a lower final.
Heck, I've drug 7K behind my truck, with 2.75 gears. Of course, it never made any faster than 40, and 3rd never engaged. Thankfully, it was only a few miles of flat backroads.
I've drug 5K several times, and once I went ~200 miles on the interstate with that much. Wasn't fast uphill, but went up them.
