I am new here, And trying to find out what I might have to do to swap out a worn out 302 for a 351w. The truck is a 1993 and the new 351w is a 94 model out of a truck, Any help or info is greatly appreciated. Thank you
That's a good link except for the comment about the M5 snapping like a twig behind the 5.8.. it's not that weak.
Condensed version of the 5.0-5.8 swap is..
- Get a complete 5.8 EFI motor for the swap because very little transfers from the 5.0.
- DO NOT remove or alter any part of your truck wiring harness.
- Mount the 5.8 where the 5.0 was with a 28oz flywheel or flexplate for your specific transmission.
- Reattach the wiring harness to the engine, everything is in the same place with the same connectors.
- Substitute a 5.8 EEC that also matches your transmission EXCEPT if the truck is mass air, in that case do not change the EEC.
- Mount all the accessories and starter.
- Connect the exhaust with a 5.8 Y pipe or custom setup.
- Done.
Conanski, what are your thoughts on a 5.0 to Lightning 5.8 swap with the 4R70W transmission?
My truck is mass air.
That's the same deal but the Lightning motor will stretch the 19lb injectors and possibly the fuel pump to and beyond their limits if you upgrade the cam.. which is WAY too easy so why wouldn't you. But that means you then need a set of 24lb squirters with a matching MAF meter or better yet some tuning. The trans should always get a shift kit no matter what motor you use, matter of fact every one of these trucks should get a shift kit even if you're not changing the motor, Ford set them up far too soft and smooth and this is directly responsible for many of the premature failures we see.

Thanks for the input.
I'm not sure if I would upgrade the cam or not. I hadn't actualy thought about that much. The motor I was looking at is a zero mile factory motor, so I hadn't considered modifying it. I was thinking it would just be a cool swap.
If I don't do that, I'm not sure if I will do a 5.8 swap anyway or just beef up the 5.0. I do like the idea of having a 5.8 though.
