I bought a 97 F150 v6 4.2 with no ac compressor clutch. My manual has no info on this at all. Anybody have info on replacing the clutch, or point me to a diagram or info? Thanks in advance
No diagram but the clutch assembly is pretty straightforward.
The coil is a light press fit, you tap it into place with a hammer and wood block.
The pulley slips onto the "snout" and is retained with a snap ring.
The clutch plate slips onto the splined shaft and is held in place with a bolt in the center of the plate. The clutch gap is set with shims between the shaft and clutch plate. (.010-.030")
I wonder if you are just missing the clutch plate, bolt and shims? If the pulley is still on the compressor, that's all that is missing. I've seen this a few times.
Before buying compressor, find out if the old one is seized or has failed internally.
If so, you're in for much more than just a compressor. If the old compressor grenaded, the condenser will be full of debris as will the orifice tube. The accumulator will also need to be replaced.
thanks, I'll do that. The guy I bought the truck from said his son in law needed a clutch so he took this one after he parked it, so it may be ok.
Cool. It sounds like you might be ok. Give it a few turns and see how it feels.
A clutch kit is about $100.
Even though a reman compressor is about $150, I wouldn't advise it. Those "cost effective" reman compressors from the chain parts stores are of very questionable quality. Your money would be better spent on the clutch kit for your OEM compressor. (Snag a bolt from a junker if the kit doesn't come with one).
A quality reman compressor will be in the $230 range. A brand new compressor is close to that price and may even be a few dollars less.
