Question about an intake pop ???
I'm new to the V10 engine, never worked on one so theres a bunch of things I probably dont know about them.
Give me a ol small block, big block Chevy or Ford & I'm right at home.
What I have is a 99 F-53 chassis motorhome & V10 engine & what I'm hearing is what sounds like an intermitted pop back through the intake.
It dont do it all the time & only does it after about 3 or 4 hours traveling time & when the engines pulling hard in high gear, kinda lugging some before the trans changes down to the next gear. Does not do it after the trans changes & rpms go up.
Our first long trip this past week out to MO, did fine all the way out & about 3/4 way back home it did this pop thing.
Its not realy that bad & only after running a long time does it show up, but I want to find out what it is before it has a chance to get bad.
One note,
we were running in a mighty bad rain storm I guess for about 150, 200 miles before it started doing this & wonder if water could have got into the ignition, a coil pack or something.
At one time in real hard rain, it was like something was cutting the key off & on real real quick, but that was only for a short spell & not done that anymore.
I'm real pleased with the performance so far, even though its the older 275 hp one & doing a good job at that moving 24,500 lbs of motorhome & enclosed trailer down the road.
Shucks, I even got to watch my speed on somewhat flat ground or else I'll be running 75. I guess its one of them ol trucker thangs, foot on the floor cause you know a hill is comming soon or later.
Oh, this is a 99 year model, but only got 30,000 miles on it.
Thanks, Neil
Now I dont know what CES means far as codes, but during the trip, 14 hours each way, the ABS light came on several times.
Once the engine was turned off like when gassing up, it stayed off for a right good while & then come back on. Did that 3 or 4 times out & back to home.

I've heard talk of those coil packs messing up, going bad, but never had a V10 so dont know how they would act up or what they would cause the engine to do.
If it is a coil pack & if I would think logic like on a V8 engine, sounds like a misfire at the wrong time, either as the intake valve was opening or in between when the intake is closing & exhaust opening.
Everything started happening during or after the rain storm we drove through.
Thanks, Neil
There was a TSB about water getting into the air filter housing on the F53, I thought it was only the '99, but the following TSB shows 1999 through 2004.

That replacement air filter tube they are showing in that link you listed, that a free replacement warranty thing Ford is offering, cause looks like it should be.

I can't look them up, but there are Ford "programs" that sometimes exist that extend coverage for a known issue for a much longer time than the standard warranty.
Other than that, I dunno what to do, if this is indeed the case.
While it was happening, stopping and opening the air filter box, if it was wet, would definitely tell you the true story. Now? Dunno...
