Limping E4OD Reset Itself.

I was pulling our 27’ trailer to the campground this weekend when a hard 2nd to 3rd shift put me into limp mode. It was kind of my fault for manually shifting at too high of an rpm into 3rd gear. The gear indicator has never read right since last winter when a bunch of ice and mud froze around the shift linkage. It got so bad that I had to crawl under and bust off clods of mud and ice just too manually shift gears. Now when it indicates drive, I may really be in 2nd gear. That’s where the confusion comes in. I had just crested a long hill and pushed the lever into what I thought was drive but it was still hung up in 2nd gear. The revs were coming up fast but no shift. I quickly realized the problem, let up on the gas a bit and shoved it fully into drive. It was an extremely hard shift and felt as if I had done a neutral drop. The overdrive off light immediately began blinking. That’s the first time I’ve ever felt a tranny in limp mode and for the next couple days every shift nearly gave me whiplash. Anyway a couple days later I drove into town to have the codes pulled and it reset itself before I got there and showed zero codes.
So, did I get lucky and life is good or should I be concerned that some permanent damage has occurred and needs addressed?
