Hi, long time lurker here, but I've learned a whole lot. Anyway, I've recently developed an intermittent starting issue on my 2003 7.3 (160k miles). Basically, on occasion, it won't start....just cranks and cranks. After cycling the glow plugs (WTS light) a few/several times, it will start just fine and it'll be fine for the next couple of days. It generally happens once every 3-4 days of normal driving. It has never left me stranded and once it starts, it runs just fine. No smoke during cranking. The truck is bone stock, except for the 6637 filter. The CPS was replaced a couple of years ago under the Ford recall. Fresh oil and fuel filters. Any direction/assistance would be appreciated...sorry, I'm more of a underbody guy.
A topic search revealed a ton of info, but nothing that seems to specifically match my issue. Thanks, Tim.
I would check the ICP sensor it is located on the drivers side oil rail, right up front near the engine lift hook. Pull the plug and see if it is oily, they are famous for leaking internally into the plug whcih will cause a hard start issue...
There are a few other sensors that come to mind, IPR, CPS (even though it was replaced) but I'd take a quick look at the ICP.
No white smoke during no start cranks is a tell tale sign the injectors are not firing.
RHN Performance's ICP sensor check is a good start.
Also check the connection at the IPR.
I hate to think you may have an intermittent IDM problem.
Would be nice if someone close with AE or scanner that can read ICP and IPR duty cycle were near. It was also be nice to see if there are any codes stored. Michigan is a little far for me. Post for some help in the Michigan Chapter.
My truck did that to me a few years back. Intermittent no-start when warm. Then one day it just shut off on the freeway. Wasted a bunch of time and money replacing sensors. Diagnosis by replacement is expensive. I finally wised up and bought AutoEnginuity. Found the problem instantly....no injector control pressure while cranking. Turned out to be a dirty IPR. Bought a new one and keep the old one as a spare.
Unplug the ICP and try starting. The PCM uses a default if it can't read the ICP.
