I know this is a truck forum, but I figure a Ford sohc 4.6 in truck can have the same issues as my neighbors 95' 4.6 Cougar. Motor just died on her the other day. She had it towed back and this is what I found.
1. good spark
2. good fuel pressure
3. cranking vac. test = 0 to very low hg
4. compression test = All passenger side cyl had ZERO compression. The Dr. side went 1st cyl 95psi, 2nd 90, 3rd 120, and 4th 130.
I'm thinking the timing belt let go, especially on the pass side of the motor. This car has 100k, is it really worth doing the timing belt. Or should she just get a new motor?
timing chain isn't really that hard to replace. it requires you remove the entire front of the motor (timing covers both sides, water pump, alt, fan & pulleys).
it's a worthwhile project if she doesn't have alot of money to spend on this repair.
however...you should have seen some compression on at least 1-2 of the cylinders. All 4 at 0 psig indicates more of an issue like a blown head gasket or cracked block.
you can try fixing the timing chain first...if it's good, you haven't wasted any time. you still have to remove all of that stuff to pull the head. so consider it "investigative" tear down.
From what you described I think the engine has bent valves and will need a fresh top end, when you get a valve cover off and see the condition of the engine you will have a better idea of the way to go. If the engine has a lot of sludge start looking for a used engine or a reman., if it's pretty clean you might just do the top end.
