I am a new member here, and would like some tech tips, if possible. I have an '89 F150 5 speed that I am replacing the gearshift boot. How do I get the black gearshift sleeve and **** off? This looks necessary before I can install the new boot and rubber seal over the shaft coming out of the top of the transmission.
Any help would be appreciated-- I am stumped at the moment...
Read here - all you have to do is pull the screws that hold the boot/bezel down, lift them up the shaft, and remove 1 or 2 bolts that hold the shaft on the shifter stub of the transmission.
The **** is a PITA. You will need a heat gun (a hir dryer might work). The heat gunn will make it a lot easier trust me. The **** is not screwed on at all, it is glued on. Just heat it up and pull it off.
Thanks all, for the tips. I did achieve success. The shift lever came off easily by removing only one nut and its corresponding threaded shaft. Although the noise damper I received from the Ford dealer was rubber, instead of fiberglass insulation, it actually seems to be an improvement. I removed the shifter **** by tapping it off with a hammer and a block of wood. I then sprayed the shift lever with WD-40 and the noise damper and boot slid down the shaft with little effort. The link was a great help-- by the way, in answer to the above post, I did replace everything with stock parts. My success was directly related to these posts-- My thanks to all.
The original fiberglass insulation had all but fallen out, and, the original boot had torn. This allowed a lot of road noise/transmission sounds up into the cab. By replacing these parts, the problem was taken care of.
