Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't have bought the 5.4 or V10? This diesel gets around 10 mpg and my old 5.4 got 12 13 and the fuel was cheaper! I need a way to get better economy mpg because this just sucks! I thought diesels were better on fuel than this - O and yes it does have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy more power but still. [IMG]
Alot depends on how you drive and where you drive it. If you just driving it in the city, it is not going to be great. Stop and go is hard on mpg's. Truck wt is around 8K.
If you are on hwy/country roads then try to keep off the boost, rpms around 1500 should yield around 50-55 mph.
So the trick is stay off the boost and gradual accelerations and coasting to a stop.

I think you answered your own question, POWER! I had the 5.4 before I moved to the 6.4. Yes, the 5.4 yielded 13.5-14.5 in mpg empty. But I could not pull what I wanted to pull. Pulling 10,000 lb with the 5.4 yielded 5.5-6.5 mpg at it s best. Now with the 6.4. I do get 16-17 consistent with Hiway driving empty and a strong 10 mpg pulling the same 10,000 lb without the downshifting. I do have 3.73's as did the 5.4.
As Senix stated, 8,000 lb vehicle for the 6.4l, compared to nearly 1000 lbs less for the 5.4...well physics does play roll here.

For the most part you are NOT going to get people on this forum to bash the 6.4
The MPG is terrible and I feel Ford did a bad job in the MPG department
This is a 2010 truck shouldn't we get better then 11-12 city and 15 highway
You can add a program but then if Ford finds out you have no warranty
The program adds 2-3MPG and they have some that start in the 300-400 range
It will get a bit better as the motor gets some miles on it
One thing on this forum you have to take what people write with a grain of salt these trucks cost a lot and many that buy them have very high payments so they don't want to hear anything bad about their trucks and will post things not true to make them selves feel better
If you think about the costs in some parts of the country you can buy a house for less then a 2010 6.4
Anyways good luck with the truck in many ways they are the best truck out there

specifically what truck do you have? DRW? 4x4? axle ratio?
I have an 08 drw 4.10 rear 6.4.. on the highway, empty at 70 I can get near 14.
I suppose I could do better by slowing down, but that just doesn't happen..
| I should add that I have the very UN-aerodynamic ranch hand front bumper.. if the large air dam made any difference (and it did I guess) , then my bumper makes it worse too!
I don't think there is any way to get 18 or more.
around town I get a solid 12.6. empty. on the highway, towing my 7000lb trailer & show car, I get around 11... vs 6.1mpg for the 08 suburban. (14.2 no trailer)
but the difference is 50% of the towing capacity, vs 100% of the towing capacity.
So, if you tow heavyish (7000lbs or more), then while towing the diesel should beat the v8/v10 without a question.. (mpg).. and for me the stress is eliminated with the better towing experience..

Sam
I will inject somewhat off topic numbers as a reality check.
I just got back from a 2200 mile trip in my 06 CTD (presmog). Auto, 3.73 gears. No trailer. No real load in the bed. All freeway. 22 MPG when running 65 mpg. 20 mpg running 70 mph. Averaged 21 mpg overall (the trip was about half and half).
The same truck will do 13 mpg-14 mpg pulling my 35' open car trailer with 2 cars on it (10,000 lbs.-11,000 lbs.) or 12 mpg - 13 mpg pulling my 24' extra high enclosed trailer (about 8000 lbs.).
My '96 Dodge V-10 (don't know what gear, but probably 4.10) got about 9 mpg pulling the same 35' open trailer.
BTW - Wind resistance is by far the biggest factor for me with mpgs. The enclosed trailer gets the same mpgs loaded or empty. And I almost always get better mpgs heading North than heading South (winds are almost always out of the South or Southwest around here). And I can increase mpgs by almost 2 mpgs by drafting semis (which they do not like, so I only do it in case of a heavy headwind).

OK, well here we go again. You are not going to get very good mileage with this truck, period. You say 10mpg. that sounds a little lower than most unless you are loaded or hot footing it. Anyway, I have developed a three step plan for dealing with the economy of my truck. I'll share it with you. 1. Get an after market large fuel tank (60 gallon works well), to reduce the frequency of fill ups. 2. Never look at the pump, set the pump on and only look at the filler tube. 3. when finished fueling just grab the receipt and shove it in your pocket, do not read it.
The other option is to delete the Diesel Particulate Filter and add a performance chip. People on here are reporting a 3mpg or so improvement, some more. Down sides are you are voiding your warranty, it cost a bunch of bucks ($1200 or so) I think, and you are committing a federal crime. I wouldn't worry much about the last one unless you live somewhere that inspects diesels for smog.
I would also like to add that it is unfair to get too angry with ford. the other manufacturers have the same problems. The blame belongs in congress which has let the EPA run roughshod over the country as they invent ever more strict standards to justify their existence. So, find and vote for candidates who have the stones to slow them down.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. This is a great place to gain a lot of information about your new truck. Some of it is even accurate.
I just got a 2010 f-350 4X4 srw CC and it only has 600 miles on it nowhere near the breakin point but I'm getting about 13 mpg in town but I mostly do hwy driving and I'm getting 18 or little more on the highway which is WAY more then my 08 f-250 5.4 was getting.

Could you tell us how fast you were going to get the 18?
