I have an '06 F150 SCREW 4x4 5.4L. Just developed a problem. Left home last night and after about 3.5 miles heard a terrible noise, kind of like metal dragging on the road or metal in spinning/shaking around inside a container. It continues until I brake and slow down to ~10mph. At that point it's like something grabs and the noise disappears. I drove it on another ~12 miles without issue.
This morning on the way to church, it did the same at ~4 miles. And again at ~5 miles on the way home. The noise is awful.
Sounds like it is coming from the transmission area. The last time it happened I tried to accerlate to see if I had power and everything seemed normal (except the loud noise). Could this be an issue with the torque converter?
Does the noise change pitch with RPM, Vehicle Speed, or transmission gear? I hope its something as simple as an issue with your brakes or something. However I hear these transmissions are easy to tear apart.
Maybe next time you hear the noise, put the truck in neutral and see if the noise disappears.
Does not change with engine speed. Did not try different gears. Definitely not a brake issue. Not sure if dealer is open tomorrow. If so I will take it there. Other info, the vehicle has ~82k miles. Never had an issue.
tooldad, I dont think the Ford dealers are open tommorow. I am actually doing an internship at the Ford tech hotline here in dearborn (the place the tech's call if they get stumped) and we are closed tommorow. Ironically I am on the transmission team down there, and am learning alot.
If it was a Torque converter issue, I would expect it to change with engine RPM moreso than vehicle speed. So it is either something driveline releated, or something internal to your transmission.
Some good things to check would be tranny fluid level and quality, and also if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from that would be helpful. Or you can just take it to the Ford Dealer, and see what they say.
I would be more inclined to suspect something with your 4x4 system or IWE actuators from what you have described. However anything is possible
Good luck, and I hope it is nothing too expensive.
I will take it for another spin and do some other checks assuming it acts up again. I am just hoping the issue is easily identifiable by the Ford techs and that my extended coverage covers it. Will let you know if I find anything further. Thanks.
Its your front wheel hub. IWE Look this issue up on the forum. Very common issue with the front. You have lost vacume so the front hub is trying to engage.
Roller 150, you and I are on the same thought train...
Under accelration the engine vacuum decreases, and the hub tries to engage. Slow down and the engine vacuum increases and the hub is disengaged
Tooldad, one easy check you can do is put your truck in 4x4. This will cut off all vacuum to your hubs and if the noise goes away, then bingo you know your problem
Bingo! Drove it again this morning. About 1.5 miles and it made the noise again. Flipped the 4xHi switch and it went away. About 6 miles later it did it again (not accerlating at the time), and flipping the 4XHi sitch again stopped the noise. Going by the dealership parts department tomorrow. Thanks!

Reason: spelling
Tooldad, don't run out and start buying a bunch of parts yet. Find the thread on here "everything you wanted to know about the IWE system". You need to diagnose exactly where your loosing vacuum. Or just take in in and have the techs fix it. But just don't start throwing parts at it.
Good to hear there tooldad. Like oldguy4 said, that does not pinpoint it down to the IWE actuators. It could be something as simple as an unplugged vacuum line, leaky check valves, or a leaky vacuum solenoid.
Simple thing to check so just turn your wheel all the way to one side and go and take a look to make sure that line is not disconnected at the wheel.
It applies to 2004-2006 vehicles.
If you want to get really hands on, take a vacuum pump, and pull a vacuum on each wheel end to observe that it holds vacuum. Be sure to pull a vacuum on the vacuum side, not the vent. The vacuum will be the larger port. If they hold vacuum and disengage then bingo, you know you have an issue elsewhere in the system. I know there was an issue with the IWE solenoid as well, and a TSB was issued, where it would short out due to water damage.
Yesterday, and intermittent problems often do, it did not surface during my work commute. Decided that parts are cheap relative to labor, so proceeded with replacing the solenoid. Turns out my truck was produced in 5/06 (after solenoid change) and thus had the new improved solenoid & bracket. Replaced anyway. The hoses were firmly connected at the solenoid and at both IWE's. I disconnected the hoses at the IWE to check for water, but nothing. Have driven approximately 25 miles thus far today with no know issue. Time will tell I suppose. I plan to post a couple of pics in my gallery later.
