Top loader troubles

I just picked up my 66 (same as in the sig) 2 weekends ago and have been working heavily to get it ready to go up north @ the end of June.

I think a may have some issues with my 4 speed (NP435). When i got it the PO said it was stuck in 4th. Which it was. I pulled the top, played with the gears, countershafts and reset the top and it starting working fine. A few laps around the yard and clutch exploded. (i'm assuming they moved it around starting in 4th, which wore it out).

I have since replaced the clutch and it seems to be working well. My question is how much should reverse and low grind when it goes into gear (these are non-syncroed). It doesnt grind hard but it sounds like im meeting a stationary gear to a moving one and it grinds a little going in.

I'm nervous that i have not fixed the problem and something with explode if i get it going over 2nd gear.

Any thoughts would be extremely appreciated!

1st and reverse will always grind, for just the reason you posted. You don't usually use 1st in normal driving situations.

ahhh...sounds of music...reverse and first that is...just dont cram it in those gears..as for getting it unstuck...another way would have been to undo or jack the rear end up end rotate it backwards a bit to see if that freed up the shift forks...mine got stuck inbetween gears once along time ago...it fixed it for me...no problems since...as for the clutch...if it was all but welded/rusted to the flywheel, thats prolly why it was stuck in 4th in your case...no clutch= no shift without causing havoc inside.
As for how much 1st and rev grind...I usually wait till its nearly stopped and lightly rest the lever towards the appropriate gear...until it drops...first is essentially all but at a stop when you go in it as its the stump pulling gear...
In general the NP435 is IMO an all but bulletproof gearbox...teamed with an FE...stumps lose every time without fail...

Mebbe y'all oughtta learn how to double clutch.

The NP435 has two nylon inserts on each shift fork. When these crack apart, fall off, shifting can be a PITA...especially if the broken pieces get jammed up within the gear train.

2) D2TZ7C430B (replaced D2TZ7C430A) .. Insert-1st/2nd Gear Shift Fork / Obsolete

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has 9 = 606-787-5293.

PARTS INTERNATIONAL in Farmers Branch TX has 50 = 888-727-0418.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 99 = 800-543-4959.

2) C2TZ7C430B (replaced C2TZ7C430A) .. Insert-3rd/4th Gear Shift Fork / Obsolete

PARTS INTERNATIONAL has 9.

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS has 35.

GREEN SALES CO. has 65.

You can start out in 4th...?
I thought it killed the Engine.
Reverse & First Gear, are both Lower Gears, and are hard to get into, and maybe even impossible if your not stopped. You should usually start in Second Gear, and usually just use first for Luggin', Pullin' Towin' trailers up steep grades...etc.

thanks for the info Numberdummy, i didn't mention it before but one of those is pretty wore out.

Well at least I feel comfortable that it's not going to explode.

I thought double clutching only helped going from gear to gear. Most of the grinding is from intial take off.

I guess if i was rolling i could let the clutch out in neutral, get the trans up to speed and then shift into first while rolling. I bought this truck strickly for mud bogging so i have a feeling i will be using the non-syncroed section a lot.

Thanks for all the help guys!

When sitting still, in neutral, foot off the clutch pedal, with the engine at an idle, to put the tranny in first or reverse WITHOUT grinding any gears simply disingage the clutch and put the tranny in ANY gear that has syncro's (2nd,3rd or 4th) and then into the non-syncroed gear without pausing. Doing this stops the intire gear assymbly from turning and allows a smooth shift into first or reverse. Tom
