What is causing my pinging???
'88 302. Ive been running 93 octane lately because anything lower causes a lot of pinging. Even with 93, i still get a little bit of pinging going down the highway, esp. when going up an incline. Im positive the timing is at 10 BTDC, ive had it up to 12 in the past with no problems. and the engine temps seem to be normal too. could it be:
-timing chain lose or cam timing off
-one or more injectors gone bad causing a lean condition
-something is causing the distributor to advance too much at high RPM
-EGR problem
any thoughts??? thanks

On a truck this old it's probably a rusted smog line at the back of the engine, if the smog system is still on the motor it's probably no longer complete so i'd suggest removing what remains and plugging the holes, because any leaks upstream of the O2 sensor will cause the engine to run excessively lean.

Check your #7 and #8 plug wires and make sure they are not running together. Separate them as much as possible and see if that helps. I had this problem on my '90 302 and separating the wires fixed it.
