that flywheel is from a FE 360 or 390. alot of people use them to swap a 460 into these trucks. being that it is not the corect flywheel for a 460 they tend to cause starter problems. L&L products makes a flywheel for 460 conversions.

If you use the 390 flywheel you have to take te gear off the FE starter and put it on yours to take care of the problem.

i have had no trouble with my 460/390 flywheel set up at all. i'm using a stock 460 starter and had a new ring gear installed on the flywheel due to the old one being worn. the two seem to mesh just fine.

there is no difference between the starter drives. I went to napa and asked for a 360 starter drive, when i got it home I realized it was identical to the one one the 400 starter I had. I looked up the part numbers they list the same drive for every thing from a 300 six to a 460.

I recently bought a truck with a 460 and fe flywheel that has the same starter problems. I've tried a starter from a 400, a 360, and I also tried one from a '97 460. they all grind. I know a lot of guys do use the FE flywheel with out any problems, but others the starter doesn't mesh with the flywheel. Any ideas why this would be? could the block and bell housing be out of alignment?

Dont quote me on this but i have heard alot of guys say that if you use the 351/400 bellhousing its not deep enough. That may be the problem. While the M bellhousing will bolt up it is however different.

I have 2 78 ford f250s with 460 4 speeds I used 390 flywheels on both with a 351-400 m bell housing and starter They have been starting great for several years now.

ive heard they are not deep enough for a 460 flywheel. thats why people use the thinner FE flywheel. I do know both flywheels have the about same outside diameter and they both use the same starter drive. the starters I've tried are getting deep enough just not close enough towards the engine. it is grinding off the top of the ring gear and starter drive teeth.
