Front Axle ID ?

I have an 87' F-250 and am trying to ID the front axle .. the tag reads ..

3 54 -E6TA ZA
- 610254

the dashes above are actually an upside triangle ..

I have an axle code of B9 for the rear .. which is rated for 5300 lbs, is limited slip and has 3.55 gears ..

I suspect the front is a Dana 44HD or Dana 50 .. but ??

what would one expect to pay at a junkyard / pick and pull for a replacement ?

Easiest way to tell is to look at the size of the hub.

Dana 50/60:

Dana 44:

Ok .. so it's a dana 50 .. my '87 F-250 is a biatch cause it's the fist year of a F-150 redesign, but some things lagged behind on the 3/4 and 1 tons ..

also found this at Off Road Adventures mag

Up front, the F-250HD and pre-’85 F-350s used the Twin Traction Beam (TTB) setups. While called an IFS, it was really a semi-independent suspension. TTB came in coil or leaf spring versions, but the F-250s and F-350s used the leaf spring type. The F-250s had reverse cut Dana 44 IFS until the 1987 model year, when they began using the Dana 50IFS. Until about February of ’85, the F-350 used a Dana 50 IFS, after which it was upgraded to a Dana 60 solid axle. The Dana 50 IFS was available as an option in pre-’87 F-250 HDs (4,600 pound HD front axle option) and was routinely fitted to SuperCab F-250 HDs. By 1987, the Dana 50IFS had replaced the Dana 44IFS in F-250HDs. A front limited slip shows up in Ford data books through at least 1985.

any ideas on the going rate for a decent used one ?

how new (model year) can I go without running into trouble fitting it up ?

will a solid axle 60 be a bolt on operation ? if so, what model years are possible donors for a D60 ?

TIA
