i went out the other night and when i went to my bronco, my interior lights were on but real dim, and when i opened the door they came on like usual, i smelled wires burning, so i checked the light switch and it seemed ok.and when i turned my lights on my drivers side speaker started cracking...i have a short somewhere and was wondering if anyone had similar problems...thanks for the help
I haven't had a similar problem but by the symptoms you described, I'd be checking the wiring harness where it runs from the body through to the driver's door. All of the circuits affected run through that location (i.e. driver's side speaker, interior lights). Sounds like maybe a failed grommet or insulation problem right there in the door or the harness from the truck through the door.
The interior lights don't run thru the door harness in '85. That wasn't until '92. They're all in the driver's kick panel and under the driver's threshhold, which is probably where they're shorted because of all the water. Also, check near the shoulder belt reel.
Maybe not through the door harness but the door harness still branches off the body harness that runs to that side of the truck and a short in that area has the potential to adversly affect any circuit involved including the audio wiring and the interior lighting door switch. Considering the description of the symptoms include wiring that DOES run into the door, its a logical place to start.
