Low whine

2000/F350/7.3L/4X4/AC
I have a low whine when I touch my breaks and when use my steering. the vehicle can be moving or not and the sound is the same. Not sure what power assist? or pump is a shared item that would make both steering and brakes whine? Any ideas?
Thanks

The brakes get their power assist from the power steering pump. I am sure that the pump whining is what you hear. Have you checked the fluid level?

Brakes and steering use the same pump. Check the fluid level. It maybe time for a system flush. Do not use power steering fluid. Our systems require auto trans fluid. You can find flushing instructions here. Roadside Help Network - Guides, Maintenance & Mods

Our PS system uses ATF and not power steering fluid. I would do a system flush and use synthetic ATF. That should take care of the whine that you are hearing

Edit: Paul has quicker fingers.........

X3 on this. The power steering pump gets ignored by most people unfortunately. Mine started whining, so I did the flush and installed fresh synthetic tranny fluid, and the whine went away, and it steers easier when sitting still. To keep it fresh, about every other oil change I suck out the fluid in the PS pump and top it off with new synthetic ATF.
