Rust problems

My fathers 62 f-100 has a massive rust problem up buy the rain gutters above both doors. We have a parts truck that is a 64 f-100. Around the roof of his truck is seem going all the way around, would it be possible to pry the roof off of the 62 and replace it with the roof from the 64? Is this a waste of time or should we just cut out the rust and attempt to apply new metal? Any help would be greatful. I'll post pics soon so everyone will know what I'm talking about if there is any confusion.

Unless the 62 is a unibody, why not just swap cabs, they are the same, and no body repairs. The uni one piece cab-bed would not swap.

Tops may be the same. Body repair skill would need to be good.

It is probably easier over the long haul to cut the pillars and swap the roofs there. Precise measuring is required of course, but replacing just the roof skin is something like a 16 hour job in the old crash book (meaning, just replacing with a brand new part, no extra trimming). HUGE job and no fun. Joe is right; if you can swap cabs you're probably better off.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I guess the 64 doesn't have a unibody. It has a similar cab structure which is why I was considering swaping the roof skins. Were just going to cut out the rust and replace the metal. Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it.

Rust Problem

In areas where the rust has eaten through you will need to replace the material with either parts form a scrap yard or fabricate your own. If the rust is on the surface and the integrity of the metal beneath is still OK I would recommend you clean off as much of the rust as you can and then treat it with Master Series Silver Primer to arrest the rusting process and fill in the pits before applying a top coat. Even in areas where you have replaced rusted metal with new, you should apply MS Silver Primer before doing anythng else because this is the best way I know to prepare and preserve the metal. Master Series has a whole line of great rust prevention/treatment products and metal coatings made specifically for problems like yours. And, if you call them, you will find that their technical staff are very knowledgable and eager to help. You can find out about the entire line of coatings at www.nomorerust.com
