Turbo Backpressure

hey guys
so i browsed through a whole bunch of posts but couldnt really find a straight answer.
i want to know how much backpressure (if any) our turbos need to function "properly"
if i run a straight pipe will that be to much flow? should i go with cat only? or muffler only?
thanks guys!

It is only a myth, these diesels do not need any backpressure whatsoever! I am running a full 4" straight pipe and runs like a champ ... sounds great too

any more then 4" you start to lose the bottom end power and suffer from lag.

the reason i ask is because my best friend and i both have 07 6.0 but his is a four door whereas mine is an ext cab. we run the same programmer on the same settings and no mods expect i have a stock pipe straight pipe. where he has 4 inch with cat still in. when we go out he hauls a 4x4 quad in the box yet still goes about 250-350 kms more ona tank of diesel than i do. any thoughts?

Is his a long bed and yours a short bed? If so his tank is bigger. But since you said the same, probably not.

Maybe he drives smoother or doesn't accelerate as hard as you do? Does he do more highway driving than you do?

First thing, a turbo needs "0" back pressure to operate. On the 6.0 any exhaust back pressure inhibits turbo performance. After I took the cat out and put the MBRP cat delete pipe in the remaining stock exhaust system, the first improvement I noticed was improved low end throttle response, i.e., reduced turbo lag. After I replaced the stock exhaust with a 4" MBRP exhaust, I eliminated all turbo lag.

With the straight pipe, your turbo is reacting quicker then your friends. Under the same load conditions, your initial RPM will be higher then your friends. Higher RPM = more fuel.

I would venture a guess that if you drove his truck, his throttle response would be less then yours.
