Thanks for the offer. I truly appreciate it. Reps sent. But with summer towing season getting started, I think I'm going to buy new parts. One less thing to worry about.
Thanks for the advice guys. For various reasons I won't bore the forum with, I'm dealing with somewhat of a deadline to fix this thing. After sleeping on it (I work nights), I decided to give Ed a try. I sent him a message about 1900 local time regarding overnight shipping. Still haven't heard anything back, but if it costs too much I'll check with the local dealer. I've bought small stuff from them in the past and they can have just about anything delivered the next day.
Anybody have a phone number for Ed? I can't find it on his website.
Looking back on it, I know when this happened. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed the fan running. I didn't think much about it since the air temps have really shot up lately. I shut off the engine one day at Lowe's and heard a loud THUMP. That was when the A/C started acting up. I checked out the compressor, etc. Didn't notice the radiator fan.
With overnight shipping from Ed I think it was around $$$. Just go through checkout with him and see what it is. When I ordered a fan he had to order it and got it next day and then shipped it out.
how does a fan clutch work? wouldnt it spin all the time?
Yes, but its a viscous coupling and the fan rpms don't necessarily match engine rpms. Sort of like a torque converter. The clutch is thermostatically controlled and locks up at a certain temp. I'm not sure what that temp is supposed to be, but you can really hear the fan roaring when the clutch locks.
Anyway, my clutch seized which meant that when I shut off the engine, the fan's inertia was trying to spin it in the direction which loosens the clutch shaft off the water pump pulley. A few times of that, and it spun right off.
It's all good. Pop is actually on the right track. When oldwood originally posted

what was going through my mind was that his clutch is probably a minimum 7 years old. Since he's apparently willing to sell the fan separately, I might call him about it depending on what I find out tomorrow.
Everyone's just trying to help and that's what makes this place so great. I'll post back with what I decide to do.
Just FYI, If I remember correctly, its been over a year since I did mine, you'll need to rent the OEM 5 piece wrench set and use 1 7/8" or a pipe wrench when you get the new part. So just FYI if you dont have those tools. OEM isn't factory its the name of the tool manufacturer, Auto Zone rents it, but only one of the two wrenches you need in the set work (the one that holds the 4 fan clutch bolts) ironically. Thats why the 1 7/8" or pipe wrench is needed.
Could have given his other personnal line, straight to his house. I'd have to do some searching first.
Kinda a off topic statement, but I had a small fire last night and my shed burned down.... it's insured but nothing inside was.
here is the part number for the fan for those who want to order one. Half the time I don't have time to take calls anyway..... I do the internet between everything else i'm doing.... ugh
