I'm wondering if anyone has run into any problems with the new 6.0 Power Stroke? Considering ordering one from factory and just curious if anything major has been found wrong with these. Sure seems to have some get up and go. Thanks for any input!
I've been hearing a lot of people say there is some serious trouble with that new turbo the 6.0 has. Give them a year or two to work out the bugs, and then buy one. Ford says the engine has a rated life of 250,000 miles, so it's engineered to last. Whether or not it will live up to those expectations we won't know until a few years pass.
Here is a comment from another forum from someone who works at the Indy engine plant. This is regarding the small oil leak at the bell housing. Sounds like there is no quick fix and that some re-engineering is needed to properly address this issue.
All speculation right now.
"As for the rear seal leaks (this is just my opinion), I don't think the seals are leaking. There is an adapter bolted to the end of the crankshaft where the flywheel bolts on that also provides a surface for the seal to ride on. I believe oil is wicking through that joint between the adapter and the crankshaft, through the bolt holes and out the rear of the engine. A rotating crankshaft will throw that oil all over the place and will make it impossible to determine where it is coming from, and a mechanic, who has seen hundereds of rear seal leaks, will assume that here is another one. We are going to have a hell of a time convincing the powers that be that they are going to have to put an O-ring in that joint now that the final design has been cast."
Talked with a guy this weekend who is getting rid of his new 6.0L. Ford had to buy back his '02 (3 trannies) and they worked a deal on '03 6.0L, which crapped out on him. Towed to dealer, dealer said it came with the wrong ECU program so they reburned, he took the truck and a few days later it crapped out again. Back to dealer, they are working on it and while they are working on it poof...there goes some major part to the engine. The dealer wants him to pay for a rental car while they wait 3 weeks to get the part in ... story went downhill from there.
I know you can always get a lemon ... although it sound like this guy got 2 back to back ...but sounds like there may be some significant issues. Although I would trust the input of people like The Diesel Dude who have significant knowledge around these.
I can tell you that it sure was quiet when it was running, and he reported lots more power than the 7.3 he had prior.
I do not have a new one yet, but I could be considering one.
I subscribe to an RVing mag and they tested a new SD F350 with the 6.0 in it. They were all over themselves raving on about the power, torque and quietness of the engine. I'm going to wait a while and see how that new turbo works out. I'm a tad skeptical on the reliability of it. I hope I'm wrong.
in 1986? the 6.9L diesel engine came out and had injector issues. 1989-1990 the 7.3L diesel arrives with a bunch of tranny issues(the new electronic overdrive tranny). I own a 1990 F-350 with the 7.3L/auto tranny and will be posting about my tranny problems in a new post later. 1993, The 7.3L Powerstroke is born. 60,000 miles later they all blew up. Correct me if i am wrong this is stuff i heard over the years. My point is, nothing is perfect and when something new and complex like the 6.0 comes out there will be problems. Personally i will let others brave this new world and follow in a few years.
Whatever comes out, ( snowmobiles, cycles, & cars/trucks) the first year on something usually has well above it's fair share of faults. If your the type of person that has to have the latest and greatist then go plunk your $$ down, they are amazing engines as far as power is concerned. The reliability as with everything... only time will tell.
I would give it a few years before i ever thought about buying a 6.0l with the new transmission. The first/second model year is always plauged with problems/issues...
