I have a 1989 f250 larrit with a 460 EFI , E4OD, 3.55 gears. I have a
rebuilt engine with less than 3000, and I am only getting 8mpg, does
anyone have any suggestion on improving my mpg.
wow, you might squeeze 1 or 2 more out of it, but dont look for any miracles, that 460 uses more at idle then any other engine not to mention once you hit the gas.....
how much more are you looking to get? im not sure what it should get but im guessing its not much more than that. ive had an f450 with the 460 that got 7-8 mpg.....
I was looking at getting 10-12. I sold a 1997 f250LD with a 5.4 and
3.73 gears and bought this 89 because I needed something that would
pull my RV better. What did you pull with the f450 and did the mpg
change from no load to a load.
Check fuel pressure.
Pull codes.
If the truck has dual tanks ensure it doesn't have the fuel transfer problem.
Calibrate the speedo for the tires is they are larger than stock.
i have 1993 f250 460ci i got 8mpg no matter if i drove it nice or ran the **** outa it. 7 with a 26 foot trailor. i just re-built it and should top out at 11 or 12 but i have it bored 30 over, rv cam, only 33" tires, and a new timing chain that advanced my timing. idk what youve got but inless you want to spend a bunch of money and replace your intake manifold , upper plenum, and air box your not getting more than 12.
my 78 f150 camper special w/460 and c6 got around...well, i dont know for sure, i never did the math....didnt want to know......but it took me a 1/4 tank to drive across town, empty or loaded....out on the open road, if i kept it around 55mph it seemed to be around 15mpg or so, 1/4 tank would get me around 60 miles round trip....

what did you have in the engine? what size tires? what gear ratio were you running? i did alot of research before i bought my truck and talked to a ton of people who own/owned a 460ci any year and theres only 2 ways i found to get 15mpg. 1st way: 5 grand in the engine mostly banks performance stuff. 2nd way: re-built engine(like mine)running 36" tires and i believe it was 4:11 gears(still only 15 if you kept ur foot outa it)
3:73 gears i believe, stock size tires, motor dialed in for low end torque....pulled race car trailer, edelbrock performer cam/intake/carb package, headers......
remember...i said i never did the math, just took me 1/4 tank(rear) to go 60 miles round trip on open road....driving like grandma and keeping it at or near 55.....
just dawned on me that rear tank was 19 gallon i think.....that works out to around 12.5-13....i went off 16 gallon for front before

ya that makes much more sense. with the cam and intake etc id by 13mpg. im supposed to get 12 after 2k, i only have 800 miles on my re-build right now.
haha ya the math is a sad reality for that engine. i do love my truck though. its def a beast. i can kick any ricers a** unless they have wayyy to much money n there car.lol and its fun to mud.
My 97 with 460 and 4:10 gears stock got about 13 MPG on highway empty or pulling a boat but after I lifted it and went to 35" tires it went to about 6 MPG I didn't think a couple sizes of tires would hurt it that bad
I picked up a 91 ford f250 Fuel injected 460, it is a 4 wheel drive 3/4 ton. I bought it a couple of weeks ago so far I have been getting 9 miles per gallon. That is babying it. I havent loaded it up yet so I dont know what it will do loaded. I heard these 460 engines use the same amount of gas loaded or unloaded. I hope so because I don't look foward to 6 miles per gallon when the gas prices rise again.
