Hey
I am trying to replace my front passenger wheel bearing on a 95 F-250 with a 460 and i have everything off except the lock nut right before the outer bearing. I CANNOT get it off, i went out adn got the special tool to get it off but it won't budge when i try to turn it to the left. Am i turning the right way or does anyone have any suggestions????
Are you using the spindle nut socket? You will never get it off without one. You have to get the correct one for your axle, there are two different sizes.
Thanks for the clarification. The nut should be the same thread type as the outer locknut. There should be a spacer/lock ring in between the two. That has to come off after the outer locknut is removed. This spacer has holes in it and a tab that fits in a grove on the spindle.
This spacer/lockring is the second one over from the right in this photo from a D44.
all of that has come off except the one all the way to the right, that is the lock nut that i am having problems with. I have tried everything to get it off but no luck... any ideas?????
Yes i am trying with the spindle nut socket but it won't budge
That is bad news. It should never be tightened down that much. I hope it isn't fused onto the spindle because it overheated or corroded.
To answer your question on which direction to turn it, I cannot recall if the passenger side is left or right hand thread. Both locknuts will be the same type thread. If the outer nut came off "left-loosey" then the inner should be the same direction. When something like this happens to me I grab my 30" breaker bar.
If the spindle components look corroded you may try spraying the remaining locknut with PB Blaster then let it sit for a few hours. A little heat from a torch would be my next step.
pretty sure they're right hand thread.
i've never owned a spindle nut wrench and had hubs of these trucks several times, just not in the past couple years.
i have always just used a cold chisel and a hammer
you should be able to get it out with the right socket though..
To repeat another issue, after you soak it, try and 'tighten' it, to possibly break the bond. I've used a brass drift for a little shock therapy. Place the drift on the nut, and rap it sharply in different locations around the perimeter of the nut. Also the long breaker is always a good tool to have. Short breaker? A fair sized section of pipe will do.
hey thanks for the welcome... i do all the work on my truck myself... what better way for a girl to spend her time???? I really do appreciate all the help and if i still cna't get it, i will come back tomorrow to get some more help!!!!
ya i still cant get it off so i called a mechanic friend of mine and he is coming out to help me out casue i am getting so mad and i do not want to ruin anyting or break anything!!!!
