I love the way newer mustangs sound, especially the newest ones. What do they have on them to make them sound that way? I'd like to add what ever it is to my truck.

Ahmen!!!! thats what im running on my 84 and Im not sure anything sounds better then that set up!
You could do it that way unless ground clearance is important to you. My buddies 82 Bronco 302 had his run off stock manifolds, He cut the stock Y pipe just before the part where the two pipes integrate, put a slight bend on the passengerside pipe bringing it closer to the framerail and ran it straight back over the trans crossmember, over the rearend, and out the side behind the rear tire. For the driverside he put a 90 degree bend on a section of pipe on the end of the cross over that was cut off. He then ran it down the passengerside right next to the other pipe, installed the mufflers just after the transfer case, ran it over the rearend. Then put another bend in it bringing it over to the driverside and out behind the driverside rear tire. How ever it could easily be run straight out the back as well.
Well I installed 2.5 inch tubing a Flowmaster 40 series muffler, with 2.25 duals straight out the back. It sounds throaty like a V8 at idle, when you step on it the I6 sound comes out. I have still had people fully convinced there is a V8 under the hood. However I plan to install EFI split manifolds and 3 inch tips on the tailpipes.
