Speed density cam options

I have a 1988 tube chassis Bronco with a stock 302 EFI engine. The truck has 36" tires and 4.56 gears. It is mainly for offroad use. I understand I am limited to camshaft options due to it having a speed density sensor as opposed to mass air flow and I do not want to convert it. I would like an opinion on a few upgrade cam options to increase low-end power. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ps, I just read that the main criteria seems to be duration of under 215 deg and lobe separation of at least 114 deg. Does this sound right?

Actually if you want real low rpm power from a 302 then you want a cam with much less than 215deg intake duration. The F4TE/Explorer roller cam with 1.7 rockers is about as good as it gets as far as being truely SD friendly and producing truck power, this was found in all '94+ truck motors which included the Explorer. The full roller cam assembly should transfer to your motor without any issue.

You could also use the Comp Cams 31-255-5, it's a flat tappet cam and a direct replacement for the stock truck cam.

I myself am running the Comp Cams 31-255-5, shorty headers with a 2.5inch y-pipe and 3 inch catback and a K&N airfilter (15* timing) and it scoots along pretty well, Its not no torque machine but it can get out of its own way, the cam is extremely noticeable in the upper RPM range but you can still notice it down low.

Would he have an issue with the firing order? Re-routing the spark plugs wouldn't be an issue at all, but what about fuel? I know the older speed density efi was a bank fired system, so it's dumping all kinds of fuel into the manifold, but doesn't the computer still take the firing order into consideration before opening a given bank of injectors?

He should not have a problem with the fueling, That comp cam's cam is meant for speed density. You don't even need to change the plug wires around.

Your thinking correct. You want to keep the lsa at 114 degrees or numerically higher for it to be speed density friendly.

The 31-255-5 has the same firing order as the stock cam in this motor.... not that it matters, the injectors on batch fired engines are wired the same for both the old 5.0 firing order and the HO/5.8 firing order.

No the E303 is not the HO cam, and no it(the E303) won't cooperate with an SD truck computer.
