That they are.

To the OP: I wouldn't put too much stock in the MPG figures that have been thrown around. You may or may not see those same figures depending on a variety of factors, quite a few of them you can't control for.

I typically come in lower with my MPGs then what people typically say that they get. I don't consistantly get mid to high teens even unloaded let alone loaded with my diesel. I'm usually around 12-14, the higher end being unloaded and the lower end being hitched up to one of my trailers. I'm getting about 17 with my 150 right now, but I don't use that for towing at all. Hauling some, but not towing.

Bottomline here is that you might see better or see worse MPGs then what people are quoting you on here. You won't know til you get the truck and start using it.

My envoy averages 15 - although it has the 5.3 and 3.73's. Id imagine the F150 will be a bit worse. That's ok though.

The super duty is too much truck for me in every other aspect EXCEPT the tow, so I'm trying to decide what makes more sense. Thanks again for everyone's suggestions.

You know...the best thing is you're doing this research *BEFORE* you purchase. It may not change your decision, but you're going to purchase with pretty complete information. Five years from now, you'll look back and decide if you made the better choice. I won't say "wrong" choice, because I don't think there is one here based on your requirements. (or rather, the only "wrong" decision, is not upgrading from your current tow vehicle, lol).

I had my heart set on a used 2010 F250 6.4 lariat premium at the cadillac dealer here - 4800 miles. They let me have it for a while yesterday. After driving it back to my house, to ford to have them look it over, to dinner, and back to the dealer - the thing is really nice, it's just really big. I started looking at the F150 platinum and it's everything I want ... I just wish it was 10% more capable!

I haven't even looked at 2011 specs. I'm comfortable with the 5.4l as it's been around a long time. I had the 4v FI 5.4 in my 03 cobra and a 2v 5.4 in my 98 expedition. The block is pretty tried and true -- the cobra had issues with a cast iron block mating to aluminum heads but I am very comfortable with the durability of the engine -- not sure about the new 6.2 so that's pushing me to a 2010 (as well as my wallet).

Anyone have access to an x-plan pin?

Sounds like you are answering your own ? I think that if you want an f150 and it is just lacking 10% capability. I would buy the f150. I own a superduty and love it, but I am also a contractor. For the 12 or so times a year that you hook up to the trailer and go 30 miles, it is ok to feel it a little. Just my .02

I am of the club of buy what you need for when you need it if your only towing 12 times or so a year get the F150 get the higher gears in it and get the max springs you can.

I think it's lower gears. Higher the number lower the gears. 4.10 is lower then 3.55(what I have on my 150).

OP: Get the 2010 Plat. if you can handle it money wise and you decide on a 150. The 6 speed with T/H mode is really neat on that one.

Is this F150 territory or do I need a superduty? I do this 2 times per month on average - usually short trips (30 miles each way) and a couple times per year I go 100 miles each way.

Thanks!
I don't know if this would help you decide, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. If you were going to stay with the F150, yes it will pull 9k. However that's right at the max end of things. Will you ever be filling the bed with extra stuff. Adds more weight. You'd be surprised how quick that 9k turns into 10k. So you have to think about spring upgrades and don't forget about stopping that load.
You should probably think about the SD. Diesel might be over kill for the short trips if the money is a concern. I tend to think of what's happening down the road (future) Is 9 all you will be pulling ever...

Good luck with the decision.

G.

Plus, he could more then likely get a cheaper 6.0 then he could for another diesel with the same amount of miles due to people's misperception of that engine. I've seen more people screw up a 6.0 and blame Ford and/or International for their issues then those that actually had a legitimate claim for an issue.
I'm not saying the 6.0 won't pull a trailer, they will, but most 6.0's can't stay out of the shop. My 05 F450 had 91K on it when I traded it, and rarely did it pull more than 5000 pounds. It went through $18,000 in repairs from 30K-80K miles. After I traded it, it went to the dealer 3 times before they even sold it. It has been to the dealer 4 times since then, and now has about 115K miles, and it has been in the dealer OVER 20 times for engine issues. The 6.0 is the Worst POS diesel that Ford ever installed. It forced my to go V10 on both my trucks. No more issues!

To bad you had a bad experience(s) like that. Mine has only been in for A/C control head and the FICM(after 4.5 yrs I think I can swallow that) and that was it. Everything else was of my own doing in the process of getting a 508 HP DRW, which I wouldn't trade in.

I truly believe the 6.0 is wrongfully thought of as the black sheep, but that's for another thread.

Oh here we go again. All the guy asked was whether or not he should go to a SD or stay with the F150. No body said anything about 6.0 6.4 Diesel vs gas or otherwise. Sorry you had a bad run with you 6.0, Mine hadn't seen the shop in 2 years, prior to my ficm replacement.
Overall been quite happy with it.

I'm afraid that I'm the one that shot the thread off track with regard to the 6.0.

There were some good 6.0's. Most that are for sale are the "problem child" ones. I notice that most used tow trucks with 6.0's are within 5,000 miles of warranty expiration 95-105K or 180K or more. Those close to 100K are more than likely the problem ones like my truck was, those with 180K or more are probably better ones just being replaced due to miles. I was trying to help the OP avert a possible 6.0 disaster not take the post off topic.

At the risk of shooting myself in the foot with my last post. You'd get a kick out this. Is was at my local Ford dealer a couple of weeks ago picking up some supplies and saw a F550 tow truck unloading. I noticed a different sound coming from the diesel. Turns out to be a 24V Cummins under the hood. Very cool. It was an 05 that was the victim of a seize up on the 6.0 OEM. They didn't want to go gasser so they slipped in the Cummins from a roll over.

I think if you posted this very same question on the 2009 F-150 forum, you would get the typical "The F-150 can do it all day" answer.

You came to the SD forum and your getting the typical Superduty answers.

I don't own an '09/'10 F-150 and I don't own a superduty. So with out bias, I can advise you to go with the Superduty. Go for a 2011 F-250 with the 6.2L gas engine and you'll be more than well equipped to handle your anticipated weight. As previously stated, an F-250 with the 5.4L will do fine as well.
