I have a 90 E250 with the 300 and cannot find a knock sensor anywhere. The dealer said there were none in the county for the 300 or the 5.0. None I can find in the aftermarket either.
So, the question is does anyone have a known good one they'd sell? Alternatively, can I use one from a different engine?
Lame. Do you really need it? The knock sensor in my own EFI 300 is unplugged
I don't know if I need it for sure, but it's not working (tapping on the the block next to it = no change in idle), and I have a pretty good knock in the motor unless I back the timing down to about 4º and run premium gas.
I've replaced all the vacuum hoses that looked suspect, and just put a new intake gasket on.
Do you unplug the SPOUT connector when you set the base timing? Have you pulled the plugs to see what they look like? Under normal conditions your engine should not knock whether your knock sensor works or not. Either your timing is not correct (which is probably the most likely) or you have some condition that's causing knock like excess carbon in the chamber that's acting as a heat riser and causing preignition. Look for carbon fouled plugs to see if this is likely.
But make sure your timing is right first. There is supposedly two timing marks on the balancer and you might be using the wrong one. Or it's possible the outer ring of your balancer has slipped on the rubber ring.
You might also want to isolate your knock. Get it idling and knocking and pull out a spark plug wire to kill one cylinder. Then work your way back on the engine going through cylinders 1 through 6. Kill one cylinder at a time and see if your knock goes away when you kill any specific one. If the knock is specific to any one cylinder it could also be piston slap or a connecting rod cap coming loose.
