Yes, many have used them. Some are BS, some are relatively useful, and the best option is going to be the one for your specific application. Having said that, if you got a V10, hit up the V10 forum in the performance section, look at anything mentioning 5startuning, he will get you a tuner program specific for your application with all mods, right on down to the throttle body spacer(.) If you have a Diesel look in the diesel section and they will point you the right way(I believe they still have a couple good sources for tuning). Let us know how it goes.
my sct tuner from 5 star tuning made a huge, instant differance. well worth the money. the trans shifts where i want it to now, has tons of power puts a grin on my face every day .

That's great AK, I am just going by general experience with gadgets in the past. I actually almost bought one but had to remind myself those days are over. I did read a lot of hype when I looked into it. That's what is good about FTE, you can get real testimonials.
the extra power is great but having the tranny shift how i want is what really did it for me..made driveablity for me so much better! theres hype for a reason lol i allways questioned them before..but now i know.
only problem is i want a tuner for some of my other trucks now...that could get expensive!

Can't you just get a tune writen for the other fords you have and run them in. Maybe I just don't understand them, cuz I am just starting the process, but I thought you flash the PCM and then unplug? I just don't know if I should wait to get mine before or after the planned y pipe and headers.

A chip (hardware) is installed on the PCM and has a tune (software) written for that specific vehicle, taking into account whatever the specific mods it has, if any.
A flash tuner plugs into the OBD 2 port, copies the original factory tune, then uploads the custom tune to the PCM. Once done, the flash tuner (Predator, SCT, Superchips, etc) is VIN locked to that vehicle.
So you see, whether you choose a chip or a flash tuner, you need one for each vehicle, and the appropriate tune for each vehicle. That gets pricey.
To the OP, depending on what engine you have, a custom tune will help you a little, or it will help you a lot.
If you have a gasser, it will help a bit, but not nearly as much as a custom tune does for a diesel, because the factory tune on diesel rigs leave a lot of power and performance on the table, untapped.
As stewart stated -one tuner to one vehicle at a time .
meaning when you install a tune on a vehicle, it is married to that vehicle, and can't be installed on another similar vehicle until it is uninstalled on the first...
to the op, give us some info on your engine, etc.. and we can be more specific....
I kind of figured a diesel would benefit more than a gasser and that is probably why I never got one. I guess the diesel puts out more smoke when it puts out more power and that is why a lot of power is "left on the table".

Nice explanation! Since this has become a general purpose tuner thread...
Once the tune is installed, can the tuner be removed? I'd like to keep my Scan Gauge II plugged in day-to-day.
Once I find a tune I like, it's not a requirement for me to be able to switch tunes easily.
