Ever since I got my Insight I have been watching the temps pretty close. Can anyone explain why the ECT will rise to about 180, and drop to 174. It will fluctuate between 174, and 180 as the EOT continues to rise. Once the EOT reaches about 196 the ECT rises to about 207, and the EOT tops out at about 212. My questions are why does the ECT hover around 178, and all of a sudden rise to 207. Also I am thinking the overall engine temps are a little high, what do some of you guys have to say?. BTW the temps are while I am running empty. Could I expect to see higher temps when I try to tow with it?
It's very possible that your t-stat is opening around 180, and then rising from there. It could be weak...
It does seem to be a little high, and the spread is a bit to much too. You may want to check your t-stat, and also when is the last time you flushed the coolant?

The engine coolant was flushed when I bought the truck last May. I have been contemplating doing the VC-9 flush myself this summer.
Those temps look good to me. It all dependes on your ambient temperature. Your driving habits. The road you are driving. (flats or steep hills) If you are tuned....... The fluctuations you are seeing are due to the thermostat operation and all the different variables that control the fan clutch that's controlled by the ECM.
This engine run a little hotter than older diesel engines used to run.
