Ill be starting college this fall, and Im wanting to use my IDI as my commuter. Just curious on what all I need to do to make sure this thing is as reliable is possible. Dont want to end up broke down on the side of the road in Flint Michigan.....
Mom and Dad want me to get something else, but I love my old truck and even if I do get something else I aint selling this truck. Aside from that I cant really afford anything else. Even if I do get something else that gets better mileage, it still takes a while to make up for the cost of buying something else. Besides I average 20 mpg tooling around here, and I know itll do better than 20 if I just get on the freeway and set the cruise and let it run
Charging system has been working good the whole time Ive had the truck. The batteries in it are less than 850 CCA, and about 5 years old already so I plan on replacing them with 2 good 1000 CCA batteries to combat these michigan cold starts lol.
ALL hoses, belts should be replaced. including vacuum lines and heater core hoses. if its all running fine its hard to look into the future. when was the last time you replaced the vacuum pump? glow plugs? fuel filter? air cleaner? brakes?
just put in 2 new gps a month or two ago. New brakes bout a year go, fuel filter bout 5 months ago. New serpentine belt bout a month and a half ago. VP never, air cleaner is overdue.
your folks are right.you should consider a small car.you can get around 30 mpg and gas being cheaper,it wont take long to start saving $ with a 260 mile round trip on the weekends.
iv got a 96 t-bird that gets 27/28 mpg.when i dont need the bed(running around for fun and job estimates),the truck stays home (iv always enjoyed driving a car over a truck myself anyway too.)
30 mpg is nice, but I have a feeling ill be carting things back and forth, and believe it or not those econoboxes have hauling capacities of only about 800 lbs.
Back when I lived far back in the country, I travelled over 100 miles a day, 7 days a week for the first 10 years of my 7.3's life, I had a big farm use diesel tank in the back of my barn filled with colored diesel in it. Costed around 150$ to fill it up every month 10 years ago. Sure saved alot of money fueling in my back yard all the time. lol
for a 130 mile commute in something this old I suggest an auto club memebership;
I like better world auto club, but AAA will do the trick I just don't like their customer service (or politics but we ain't gonna talk about that here)
I will say that my vw diesel getting 45-50mpg for 1500 miles a week saves me a lot more than she costs me even though she is a little maintence hog, and is a lot more fun to park when I have to go down to the city
