I have a 1978 Ford F150 with 351m and C6 transmission. I have full time 4 wheel drive. My "collar" that keeps my hub locked is badly worn on one side. It pops pretty badly when I shift in reverse and let off the gas. I am having trouble finding one of these collars or whatever the official name is. Would it hurt anything to put warns hubs in and just leave them locked in. I am eventually going to go to part time 4 wheel drive anyway.
Wont hurt anything at all.
If your local salvage yard does not have the drive slug assembly for your ford, you can consider looking at a chebby with a dana 44. The spline count is the same, and will fit your vehicle.
I have a 78 and 79 4x4 one is full time 4x4 and the other is manual locking hubs. Will I have to switch out the whole front axle to have part time 4x4 or just the hubs? New to this stuff so any help would be appreciated
As far as the front axle goes you only need to change the hubs, everything else is the same. The transfer case, however is the main part of the conversion. You can either install a part time conversion kit in the full time NP203 case or swap in a part time NP205. Swapping the entire case is a bigger project which requires driveshaft, shift linkage, and mounting modifications.

If the part time truck is just a parts truck and if the drive shafts are in good shape you could just swap'em to the full time as long as they are both 150's or 250's. Everything should be a easy bolt up. I could be wrong but I think if you take out the gear and spacer out of the full time hub and you should be able to swap in all the lock out parts to it.
Not sure if they make it any more, but my truck was the same configuration. PO installed a mile marker part time transfer case conversion kit, and installed locking hubs.
