****, I don't remember the difference anymore. But I also have the front cab mounts moved from the stock 78 location. So that prob has something to do with it.
ok. i had a thought. would a d44 work for my application if i ran chromolly axles? it might be easier for me to get ahold of than a d-60. Also would 4:10 gears fit in the stock 79 carrier? It should be plenty of strength for 35's Although i would gusset the pumpkin to the tube just for my piece of mind.
a dana 44 with chromo shafts would probably suit most peoples needs. i know some people will see this and act like that was an insane statement, but chromo shafts and some superjoints paired with a little common sense on how to use the skinny pedal will keep that axle with 35's alive for a long time. 4.10's won't work on the factory diff unless you happen to have 3.92 or numarically higher gears from the factory. jeff's bronco graveyard sells trac-locks and open carriers in both high gear and low gear split, or buy an aftermarket diff for the correct gearset you plan to use. do you know the difference between high and low pinion?
I don't see you breaking the tube at all.. ever..
I've only seen it happen a few times:
Jumping it.
REALLY big tires, hitting mud fast.
I think your in the clear with 35's. And I HIGHLY doubt you will need chromo axles in the D44 either. It should hold up to 35's without any problems at all.
yes i do know the difference hp d44 came in 78-79 f-150s and broncos. thats the one im lookin to put gears in what would i have to specifically get for 4:10 gears just a whole housing or third member. i know how to set the gears in a diff. just not too sure on clearance. the high gearset im guessing is for the high pinion 44?
if you want an open diff in front you will need to get this to use 4.10's http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-...3-93-5-38.html and if you have never set up a diff and gears before, you might want to find someone who has to help you. you can't just bolt them in and be done with it.
I know how to set them. I know its not just bolt in and go. I have only replaced stockers before, and i heard something about 4:10 not fitting the stock housing so i asked.
they fit the housing, just not the carrier. most half tons and broncos came with 3.50 gears. the case split for a dana 44 is 3.91 and down and 3.92 and up. get the right carrier, and you are good to go
alright sounds simple then. any idea for limited slip etc. for the front, or do we recomend keeping it open? Should I run the 8.8 or a 9 inch rear? thanks for all the info btw guys
for the rear i would go with the nine inch, unless you happen to find a 4.10 limited slip disk brake 8.8 for cheap. don't know if the pickups had factory disks though.
for the front, if you keep it open it will be less likely to break parts, but a ford track lock l/s would give a little more traction without being too hard on the axleshafts.
