So I checked out the alternators both were cool to the touch in the morning. So today I started looking for the voltage leak. It doesnt seem to be to bad. I'm getting just .26 amps. It is almost all from the fuse that goes to the GEM module, PCM, 4X4 control module etc. Etc. Could I just have a bad Starter. Maybe when the starter is cold it just doesnt like to turn? Dont know where to look next.
Could be that the starter solenoid is starting to stick if you're having intermittent issues with the starter not wanting to crank over but what does your voltage look like on the batteries before you start the truck in the morning?
Can you watch your voltage during cranking?
Anybody know what the PCM keep alive memory draws? I know it draws some but can't remember how much. Need to watch voltage drop while cranking and make double sure the batteries are good. Connections need to be clean and tight, both ends and all grounds.
Ok I finally had a chance to check the voltage drop while cranking.
12.47 Volts just sitting in the Morning
11.99 GPs on
10.99 first try Cranking very slow starter turn
11.23 Second try Cranking started right up.
12.23 running with GPs still on
14.42 Running no GPs
What do you guys think? Very slow to crank on first try. But second try was better. Starter?

It's hard to say without being there and seeing-hearing what's going on. It sounds like a connection problem to me at this point or a maybe starter on the way out. I would go to the trouble to check and clean every starting system connection, solinoid, starter, both batteries and each ground. They all need to be clean and tight. If that doesn't help you then it "could" be the solinoid or starter. I have company and won't be getting on much this weekend but will try to check in when I can. Good luck, stay with it, you'll find it.
Voltages look fine to me but do they stay that way? The voltage should drop a bit, down to about 13.5 to 13.8. I know my truck runs at 13.8 all day long except when charging then it'll go up to 14.1
The numbers look right to me, but I will check when I start mine in the morning. Bojo if you are checking for a drain, the only way I know how is using amps. If you know a way to do it using volts, I would be happy to learn something new today.
I just went and checked my numbers
12.67 cold
11.67 when glow plugs came on
10.50 when cranking
12.19 when started
14.25 about a min. after starting
When the new batteries were put in are you sure the connections were clean and tight. I would disconnect them, clean them and try again. That only takes a couple of minutes, I would hate for you to put a starter in if you don't really need that.
I cleaned up and tighten the connections on the battery side. I'm out camping and didnt have the proper tools to get the starter connections off and cleaned. I will this week. Thanks for all the help guys. Pretty sure I'm gonna order a new starter though. Is there a particular starter I should go for that is good but wont break the Bank?
