ATM fraud.

You always hear about it, never imagine it could actually happen, or believe its real. Today I went down to princess auto to make a purchase ( a $700 10,000 lb superwinch ) wanted to use my visa cause I'd rather do that for big purchases. But it was denied (for whatever reason I forgot I had ordered some truck parts the day before) and I knew I didnt have enough money in my chequeing account. So I ran to the ATM at Royal Bank. Transfered some money from a different account into my chequings. Back to princess auto, debit was denied, said "card use limited" thought "wtf never read that before? i dont have a limit on my card either..." so I went to go back to the ATM to take out cash for it. ATM wouldn't even let me access my account info or anything, said "Call royal bank at the 1-800 number. So I did. They said my card had been copied at the ATM and they got my pin number and everything! But gladly the Royal Bank caught it in time (must have been copying cards at the same ATM before and other people not so lucky? So they must have just flagged that ATM or something?? Anyways... my account has been shut down and I cannot access any of my funds untill tuesday when I have to go to the bank to get a new account set up and new bank card and new pin number.

Soooo this weekend is gonna be extremely boring, since I had some pretty good plans and now I'm stuck with no money! BUNK!

Anyways, I am NEVER using an ATM again, does not matter whether I need to or not! Will always go to a teller from now on! I suggest the same for anyone else just to be safe.

That is all.

Holy hell man, thats scary.

Does a guy's debit card have protection through your bank (like an insurance of some sort) to cover the loss of funds if that happens?

Also sucks that ya have access to no cash on a long weekend, thats a double whammy of crap!

Although I rarely use them anymore, I won't be swearing off ATM's anytime soon. Looks like the security measures worked and you where protected - right?

I always keep some cash (and firearms) at home - just case of armaggedon - or my cards are shut down!!

Yeah the royal bank will cover everything. The criminals put a "scanner" over the slot your cards go into and that thing and it copies your card information. Then they put a camera above you that records you type in your pin#.
Just some advice.... if the Royal Bank asks you if you ever shared your pin # with anyone (like your wife or something) tell them NO. They could deny a claim for that.

Would the bank cameras not catch the criminals that do this...?

good thing you caught it. i had a similar thing happen in calgary. my wife (then girlfriend) was broke, and had rent to pay. i went to the atm to get money to help her out and it confiscate my card at the machine. called the bank and they said there was a possibility my card had been deemed stolen for some reason...

technology... don't you love it?

Thats pretty crazy too Sherm.

In my younger days my buddy had his card confiscated once. We were hammered and couldnt see the keypad to input his pin number, ad after so many tries it just tookit away haha.

Oh the "good" ol days!

You always hear of this type of scam, but never really knew of anyone in person who was ripped off - glad to hear all turned out well in the end!
