So I go to the atm to get some walking around money for the weekend and the ATM said I had insufficent funds. Which I knew was not right so I immediatly went home and checked my on-line banking records and sure enough someone in Davie Florida somehow charged $456.53 to my check card. How is that possible if I have the card in my possesion? What would y'all do next? I am going to the bank as soon as I can tomorrow morning. other than that I got nothing...since I am a college student that wiped out my monthly allowance.
BigMattXXL is correct. If your Check Card has the VISA logo on it then they should be running just like a regular VISA card.
I had a similiar situation happen a couple weeks ago with a company that I do business with.
They double charged me. Called the bank & they told me to call VISA. I did that and about 1 week later half of the charge was back in my account.
Depending on your bank your exposure should be $50 or less. The place I ate lunch at today printed a reciept with my full acct# and exp date. Probably someone you never met.
I had this happen to me as well - twice! Before you read on, CALL YOUR BANK AND REPORT THIS AND CANCEL YOUR CARD!!
Ok..
First time: Someone got my check card number and charged a bunch of stuff from sears. I had to file a police report (your bank will usually require this) and I had the money back within a few days.
Second time: Someone got my credit card number and my credit card sent two letters to me. One was confirming a request to change my address and the other was to approve $5000 in western union bank checks. I promptly canceled that card for a new one.
Make sure that you never leave a credit card receipt without the waitress/ waiter picking it up if you go to a restaurant. In many cases, your name, credit card number and expiration date are on the card. For many places.. this is all they need. From what the detective told me... sometimes they can easily make fake cards and put your info on it. The strip won't work.. but the cashier will punch the numbers in.. sale is made.. crook walks out. I take it a step further.. if my full numbers are on a receipt.. I usually cross out a few of the digits. I don't trust the hired help... can't trust anyone these days.
Also, it's not a bad idea to call experian (and I think there's a few others) to place an alert on your credit accounts. It can be a pain for you (the cashier will usually have to call your credit card number and you will have to speak to them with pre determined passwords only you know), but if someone tries to change anything on the account.. the company must call you.. it's a good way to protect you account. I don't remember all the details of this, but it's a good thing once you've suspected someone is trying to steal your identity.
From what I understand, it's one of the fastest growing crimes and it's very difficult to trace. Just gotta be careful .
A guy stole my identity 8 months ago. He writes checks between $500 and $900 each. He gets free medical, in my name. He gets arrested on felony charges, and uses my name. He rents brand new tractors and doesn't return them. So far he's spent over $40,000 ...using my name. Believe me, no one really cares except the victims, (you and the stores they will rip off). A lot of police dept. have a minimum dollar limit before they do anything. That's why they only charged $456.53. You have to help yourself.
It's from the Federal Trade Commission website and it will tell you how to contact the credit bureaus and file a report with the FTC. Make friends with your banker, you will probably need their free notory service.
Good news: if you jump on this quick you won't be out any money and the credit bureau freeze you SHOULD do, will keep the junk mail for preapproved credit at a trickle.
Bad news: You could be spending a lot of time on the phone with creditors, ( but they are used to it), and at the bank writing affidavids.
And now the newest one i have heard is when you use your credit/debit etc.. watch for people with camera phones. they can take a picture of your card with there phone and you will never know they did it. then they have all they need cc number exp dates etc... watch they are out there.....
Ok I just got back from the bank and it was fairly painless. I cancled my card last night, then after class this morning I went into the bank and told them that I had a fraufulent charge on my account, they filled out some paper work then I signed it and I was done. They will fax the info to their main branch and I should have my money back in a coupleof days.
She told me that things like this happened a couple of months ago and what it turns out what happened then was all these people had eaten at the same resturnat or gone to the same store and the waiter or salesperson was making copies of the #'s and all the pertinent info, then selling them to somebody who made fake cards. then they would go to home depots in NY and NJ and apprently buy $500 gift cards. then I guess they would either use the cards or sell them to. It also happened at a Macy's store in FLA. Thats why she thinks it might be happening again because the charge on my account was an Office Depot in FLA.
There is also a scam going around the Alabama/ Gerogia area and probably more than that where people will get your gas card # off thrown away reciepts or by putting a piece of caron in the swipe for pay at the pump and when you stick your card in your #'s get imprinted in the carbon then they come right behind you and take the carbon paper and they get free gas, or what ever they want.

Yep! Exactly what happened to me! I wish more of these credit card processing machines / companies would blank out the credit card number info on the receipt. The store / restaurant has absolutley no need for this info. It's all processed electronically. There is nothing to stop someone from copying these numbers down and using / selling them (which is exactly what they do!).
