Just went to alignment shop yesterday and was going to have my truck aligned again. They found that the alignment was great but they could hardly turn the front wheels back and forth. They thought I have a bad steering box. We took it for a road test and it will not recover from a turn, (letting go of the wheel) you have to recover from a turn by turning the steering wheel. Hope this makes sense.
Has anybody had this problem? There is almost 3 degrees caster so that can't be a problem.
Just a side note, I have an old dodge beater truck and jacked it up when I got home and I can turn the wheels left and right without any problem.

I have a similar problem on my volare sourced truck.. I am running 5 degrees caster.. also took it to alignment on last Friday first time since I installed the camber shim plates.. the toe was off, and was corrected.. but still no change.
the alignment tech mentioned that he felt resistance when moving the wheels.. He thinks it might be a bound up ball joint.. and suggested unhooking the tie rods and turning the wheels to see if they move ok..
hope to do that this week.. everything is new on my front end.. so its either a bad ball joint, or a bad steering box..
Saw this somewhere and saved for future reference. Don't know if it applies, but I had never seen any info about this.
"Your control valve is out of adjustment. On top of the steering box where the 2 hoses go. Loosen the 2 bolts and center it. I watched my alignment guy do it while the motor was running. Slightly loosen them and tap it with a plastic mallet. He did it with the wheels off the ground until it no longer turned the tires. Blew me away. I was ready to buy a new steering gear. Ford pump on a Chrysler steering box, no problem (after the adjustment"
I took the tie rods off yesterday and the wheels move back and forth real easy. The iddler arm was real tight so loosened that up and the tried to turn the pitman arm, applied 125 lbs. tourque and could not turn it.
That sounds like something to try before I have to replace the box. Did I mention that the truck steers with no effort at all.
I do have a ford pump, maybe the oressure is wrong?
To many questions.
